To travel from KL Sentral to Penang by train, you will take the KTM Electric Train Service (ETS). The train does not go directly onto Penang Island; instead, it arrives at the Butterworth Railway Station on the mainland, which connects directly to the Penang Sentral Ferry Terminal for a quick boat crossing into George Town.

Route: KL Sentral → Butterworth (Penang Sentral)
Journey time: roughly 4–4½ hours
Train: KTM ETS
From Butterworth to George Town: take the ferry (about 10–15 minutes) or a Grab.
Booking: KTM ETS tickets can be booked online in advance.

KTMB operates three service tiers for this route.

Prices fluctuate slightly based on dynamic "Flexi Fares" (booking earlier yields cheaper rates):

ETS Gold: ~RM 59 – RM 60 | Takes ~4 hours 20 minutes (stops at more stations).

ETS Platinum: ~RM 79 – RM 85 | Takes ~4 hours 5 minutes (fewer stops, includes a small snack kit).

ETS Business Class: ~RM 162 |

Available on select Platinum trains, offering wide 2+1 seating, complimentary hot meals, and on-board entertainment screens.
