Happy 117th Birthday to Ethel Caterham!

Today, 21 August 2026, Ethel Caterham celebrates her 117th birthday, making her the world’s oldest living person and the oldest person ever recorded in Britain.

Born in 1909, three years before the Titanic and eight years before the Russian Revolution, Ethel has witnessed two world wars, enormous social change and more than a century of British history. She is also the last known surviving subject of King Edward VII.

Ethel was born in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, the second youngest of eight children. In 1927, she travelled to India as a young woman, where she worked as an au pair for a military family. She later married British Army Lieutenant Colonel Norman Caterham, and the couple lived in Hong Kong, where Ethel established a nursery school.

Her philosophy on longevity is refreshingly straightforward: she believes in moderation and famously says she never argues, preferring to listen and then do as she pleases.

Remarkably, Ethel survived Covid at 110 and was still driving at 97. She also welcomed a very special visitor in 2025 when King Charles III came to see her. During their conversation, she remembered his 1969 investiture as Prince of Wales and told him that “all the girls were in love with you.”

Ethel’s story is extraordinary, not least because she has outlived both of her daughters and her husband, Norman, who died in 1976. While Ethel now holds the record as the world’s oldest living person, the title of oldest person ever remains with Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to the remarkable age of 122.

On this day 81 years ago Victory in Japan day was commemorated, effectively ending the Second World War.

Europe had celebrated months earlier, while British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces in the Far East continued the fight, suffering terrible losses. After almost six years of the most destructive war in history, peace could at last be celebrated, and preparations made to return home, with Allied prisoners of war liberated and repatriated after their appalling experiences.

Join us in remembering the service and sacrifice of all involved in the Far East, without whom the freedoms we enjoy today would not have been possible.

We will remember them.

Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter.

The baby was born on Monday 3rd August 2026 at 6.20pm in a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, weighing 6lb 9oz.

Their Majesties The King and Queen, together with other members of the Royal Family, have been informed of the happy news and are said to be delighted.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank divide their time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace. Their new arrival joins big brothers August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023.

The couple married on 12 October 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Princess Eugenie has given birth to her third child, a baby girl. 👏👶🩷

The youngest daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, who already has two children with her husband Jack Brooksbank, shared the happy news with a picture of the newborn and a post on Instagram. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

It read: "Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie," followed by five heart emojis. 😍

They have not yet revealed the infant's name.

A statement from Buckingham Palace also announced the birth and said: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal.

"The baby was born weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces. Their Majesties the King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news."

Eugenie and Jack split their time between the UK and Portugal, with Jack's job based out there. 🇵🇹

It is understood they are deeply grateful to the hospital staff for their care and are taking time to decide on a name for their daughter while spending time with sons, August and Ernest.

The new baby, who is not an HRH and will not receive a royal title, is born 15th in line to the throne, with their great uncle Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, now moving down to 16th place.

The infant is also the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the third to be born since her death in 2022.
