Napoli Legend Dries Mertens bids farewell to football after an amazing career across Netherlands, Italy and Turkiye. An absolute baller and a legend of the game.. ✨
When Napoli signed Belgian forward Dries Mertens for €9.5 million, he was seen as one of the brightest talents in Europe. His time in Eredivisie had established his prominence. In Naples, he initially played mostly on the left wing, contributing with consistency but not stardom. That changed in 2016, when Maurizio Sarri shifted Mertens to the centre as a false nine. A start of something special.
In the 2016/17 season, Mertens scored 34 goals in all competitions, finishing 2nd only to Edin Džeko in the Serie A scoring charts. Despite his short frame, his movement, timing and quick link-up play became central to one of the most fluid and tactically thrilling Napoli sides in recent history. That season may not have delivered the Scudetto, but it cemented Mertens as a star.
Over the years, Mertens’ role evolved. He became a mentor to younger attackers, a leader in the dressing room and a reliable attacking presence as Napoli navigated managerial changes and transitions. In 2020, he became Napoli’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Diego Maradona and Marek Hamsík; an incredible achievement as a part of the history of an incredible club.
In 2022, after nearly a decade in Naples, Mertens left Napoli to join Galatasaray. After his departure, Napoli would go on to win the Scudetto, something he had never won, TWICE. However, his vital presence in the club’s history could never be denied. In total, he delivered 148 goals, 75 assists and 3 domestic trophies for the club.
What followed his Napoli departure was a late-career renaissance. Over the next 3 seasons, Mertens helped guide Galatasaray to 3 consecutive Süper Lig titles, adding guile and experience to a resurgent side. He became a beloved figure in Istanbul for both his humility and his footballing intelligence. Turkish fans embraced him quickly as one of their own, quite like the Neapolitans.
In a Belgium squad brimming with generational names, Mertens often played the unglamorous role for his country. He still earned over 100 caps and featured in multiple World Cups and EUROs, which are very respectable. He is also one of football’s most genuinely loved characters, thanks to his class on the pitch and charisma off it. He now retires a legend in two cities. From Utrecht to Eindhoven to Naples to Istanbul, Dries Mertens had SOME career.
Thank you, Dries Mertens. 💙
