Starring Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan, the film beautifully celebrates Indian wedding traditions, exploring themes of love, family, and sacrifice. The story is inspired by the earlier film Nadiya Ke Paar (1982), based on Keshav Prasad Mishra’s novel Kohbar Ki Shart. Its soundtrack, composed by Raamlaxman, features an impressive 14 songs, a rarity for that era.
Released on 5 August 1994, HAHK became the highest-grossing Indian film of its time, earning ₹111–128 crore worldwide. It was the first Indian film to cross the ₹100 crore mark and remains one of the highest-grossing films of the 1990s. The movie also set new trends in film distribution and storytelling, emphasizing family-oriented, non-violent narratives. Dubbed in Telugu as Premalayam, it ran successfully for over 200 days in theaters.
The film won two National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. At the 40th Filmfare Awards, it received 13 nominations and won five awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
