Sri Lanka needed only 101 runs to qualify for the Super Four. Even if they lost the match, it would not have mattered much in terms of progression. But as the defending champions of the T20 Asia Cup, their target was to retain the title—and losing to Afghanistan was never an option.

By defeating Afghanistan, Bangladesh ended the first round with four points from three matches. They have now moved above Afghanistan into second place in the points table. Sri Lanka, who won both of their first two matches, also have four points but are well ahead of Bangladesh on net run rate. Sri Lanka's net run rate stands at +1.546, while Bangladesh are on -0.270. Afghanistan, despite their defeat, still hold a superior net run rate of +2.150.
