বাংলা গানের ইতিহাস সহস্র বছরের।
বাংলার প্রকৃতিতে, নদীতে ও আকাশে যে সুর ভাসে তাতে আন্দোলিত হয়ে বাঙালি তার মনের কথা, সুখ-দুঃখের কথা, স্বপ্নের কথা বলে বেড়ায়। এসব গানের কথায় ও সুরে লেগে থাকে সোঁদা মাটির গন্ধ, তাই এ গান এত অকৃত্রিম হয়ে ওঠে।
ফলে বাংলা সংগীতের প্রধানত: তিনটি ধারা তৈরি হয়, “উচ্চাঙ্গ”, “আধুনিক” ও“লোক সংগীত”।
