PM Tarique Rahman has NOT confirmed a visit — he’s said he won’t go until Sheikh Hasina is extradited

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has not confirmed any visit to India. He has stated that he will not travel to India — including to attend the BRICS summit — until Sheikh Hasina is extradited back to Bangladesh. India has proposed dates for a visit this month, but Dhaka has not accepted, with the extradition of the ousted former PM remaining the central obstacle to any trip or improvement in bilateral ties. Rahman reportedly raised the extradition demand directly with India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka on August 10.

Next Presidential Election Aug 20: BNP’s Mirza vs. Opposition’s Oli Ahmed

Bangladesh's Election Commission has set August 20 as polling day for the country's 23rd presidential election, following the resignation of President Md. Shahabuddin on July 24. Nomination papers were submitted on August 13, scrutiny takes place August 16, and candidates may withdraw until August 18. MPs will vote by secret ballot inside the Parliament session hall from 2:00–5:00 PM. In an update since the original report: BNP has nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and the 11-party opposition alliance has nominated Col (Retd) Oli Ahmed — making this the first genuinely contested presidential election in Bangladesh since 1991.

Shakib wants to return to
Bangladesh together with Sheikh Hasina, and face trial

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan has told Reuters he is ready to return home and face trial on charges including murder, connected to the deadly 2024 protests, if the government guarantees his security. Speaking by phone from Sri Lanka, where he is playing franchise cricket, Shakib said he would prefer to return immediately, but would try to return alongside former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina if an earlier return isn't possible. He has been living in the US since Hasina's government was toppled in August 2024 and has not been back to Bangladesh since May 2024. Shakib, 39, has not retired from international cricket and hopes to play a farewell series at home and represent Bangladesh at the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Israel Rejects Trump's 15-Point Gaza Plan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally rejected US President Trump's 15-point "Board of Peace" plan for Gaza, telling his cabinet on Sunday that Israeli forces will not withdraw until Hamas is "fully and genuinely" disarmed of all weapons. The plan had proposed a phased Israeli withdrawal alongside Hamas disarmament, but Netanyahu insists disarmament must come first. Hamas says it will disarm only after a full Israeli withdrawal, and responded Sunday saying it remains committed to the plan. Netanyahu also reaffirmed there will be no Palestinian state while he remains prime minister. He faces Israeli elections on October 27, with Gaza policy expected to be a central issue. Despite an October ceasefire, Israeli strikes across Gaza have continued.
