Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) converged outside Evercare Hospital on Sunday morning to check on party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, despite repeated calls to avoid crowding the facility.

By 11:30 a.m., a steady stream of supporters from across the country had formed at the hospital gate. “I came to learn the latest update. We were told not to come, but the heart doesn’t listen,” said Shahadat Hossain, former senior joint secretary of Uttarkhan Thana BNP. Gazipur district BNP convener A K M Fazlul Haque Milon urged supporters to pray, noting that only physicians could speak to her clinical status.

On the quiet road that runs from Char Kaua ferry ghat to Laharhat launch terminal, 22 kilometers outside Barishal city, an electric rickshaw hums along with uncommon cargo: a woman driver who has decided that dignity means work, not permission.

Her name is Helena — just Helena, she says — and this is only her second day driving. “I used to be a mason’s helper,” she explains, wiping dust from the rickshaw’s worn dashboard. “That work crushed my body. Now I’m trying this.” The pay as a helper was Tk 700 a day. With the rickshaw, she rents an old battery model for a Tk 300 daily deposit (“joma”), which includes some electricity costs. After that, “Tk 200–300 remains at day’s end,” she says. “If I had my own rickshaw, I wouldn’t need to pay the deposit. I could keep my girls fed.”

BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia remains in critical condition at Evercare Hospital after a lung infection led to pneumonia, with long-standing ailments complicating treatment, party leaders and her medical team indicated on Friday.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said doctors had described her status as “extremely critical,” adding there had been no improvement over the past two days. Zia, nearly 80, was moved from a cabin to the coronary care unit (CCU) two days ago and is under the supervision of a medical board comprising local and overseas specialists.

Bangladesh’s family planning program has drifted into paralysis just as fertility begins to rise and Dhaka surges to the world’s second-largest city, according to two new datasets released within 10 days.

A nationwide Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2025) by UNICEF and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics reports total fertility at 2.4 children per woman, reversing decades of steady decline. Separately, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) ranks Dhaka second globally by population, estimating 36.6 million residents—up from ninth place 25 years ago—underscoring the scale of unmanaged urban growth.

On the morning her husband died of cancer, Sohani Hossain sent her elder daughter to sit for an SSC exam. “Life and time wait for no one,” she told the teenager, before welcoming her back home to a room with a coffin. That stark choice—grief or duty—has defined Sohani’s next decade: raising five daughters alone, surviving breast cancer herself, and expanding a cluster of hospitality and cultural ventures that are reshaping leisure in Pabna.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday cautioned that social media has become a “major crisis” globally and in Bangladesh, alleging it is being weaponized to spread disinformation, smear opponents and “create mobs,” undermining the country’s democratic trajectory.

An international team of researchers has identified a previously unmapped active fault line running roughly 400km from Jamalpur and Mymensingh in Bangladesh to Kolkata in India, with segments capable of generating earthquakes of up to magnitude 6, according to early findings shared by the project leads.

The work—led by Akhtarul Ahsan, deputy director at the Bangladesh Geological Survey and a PhD researcher at Auburn University—adds a new structure to Bangladesh’s known seismic architecture, long dominated in risk assessments by the Dauki Fault and the Indo-Burma megathrust. Other mapped domestic faults include Sitakunda (coastal), Madhupur, Shahjibazar, Jaflong and Comilla.
