A group of students from United International University (UIU) initiated by the UIU App Forum in collaboration with the Department of Career Counseling and Student Affairs (DCCSA), visited Microsoft’s Bangladesh office yesterday.

The industry visit was organized to establish __________ (1) between academia and industry and to give students __________ (2) to future technologies. United International University (UIU) has secured Tk 13 crore in funding for three major research projects. This funding is part of the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project, supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and the World Bank. The initiatives focus on solving national issues in healthcare, technology and disaster resilience.

Here's a breakdown of the three funded initiatives:
SmartAMR: This project aims to advance digital healthcare using AI to reduce prescription errors and combat the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Bangladesh. It is led by Dr. Tahmina Faiz (Department of Pharmacy) and Dr. Ohiduzzaman Tuhin (Department of CSE).

AIMScribe: This initiative will develop an AI-powered scribing system for clinical documentation and prescription counseling. The goal is to streamline medical record-keeping and empower patients with better information. App Forum (AF), a wing of the Directorate of Career Counselling & Student Affairs (DCCSA) at United International University (UIU), organized a celebratory reception titled Meet the Champions of UIU on August 9 at the university campus. The event honored UIU’s three robotics teams—UIU Mars Rover, UIU Ascend, and UIU Mariner—for their remarkable successes in recent international competitions.

Special Guest Ariful Hasan Opu, President of the Space Innovation Camp and Adviser for NASA Space Apps Challenge BD, delivered an inspiring address. Distinguished attendees included Professor Emeritus Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) at UIU, and Professor Dr. Hasan Sarwar, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering. The program was presided over by Professor ASM Salahuddin, Vice-Chancellor (in charge) of UIU.

The UIU Mars Rover Team continued its extraordinary winning streak, securing 1st place in Asia for the fourth consecutive year and 6th globally at the University Rover Challenge 2025, organized by the Mars Society, USA. They also claimed 3rd place worldwide and 1st in Asia at the 2025 Anatolian Rover Challenge, hosted by the Space Exploration Society of Turkey (UKET).

Breaking new ground in the field, UIU Mariner—Bangladesh’s first-ever university team in its category—achieved 5th place globally in the MATE ROV World Championship 2025 (Pioneer Class). The team also earned the titles of 1st place in Asia and Technical Documentation Champion for their outstanding work.

Meanwhile, UIU Ascend secured 2nd place in Asia and 7th globally in the CanSat Competition 2025, organized by the American Astronautical Society (AAS), USA. This followed their earlier achievement in 2024, where they ranked 3rd in Asia and 11th globally.

In his speech, Opu praised the teams for “changing the technology map of Bangladesh,” encouraging students to pursue excellence in both technology and academics to succeed in an increasingly interconnected, globalized world.

The event drew an audience of around 150 students from nine colleges across Dhaka, alongside UIU faculty members, officials, and distinguished guests, making it a vibrant celebration of innovation, achievement, and academic pride.

United International University (UIU) organized a solemn discussion program and Dua Mahfil on Saturday to commemorate the historic July 2024 Uprising and to honor the memory of Shaheed Irfan Bhuiyan, a former UIU student, along with all martyrs of the movement.

This event began at 2:30 p.m. on the UIU campus and was presided over by Professor A. S. M. Salahuddin, Vice Chancellor (In-Charge) of UIU. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Zulfiqur Rahman, Registrar of UIU. Distinguished speakers included Professor Dr. Salma Karim, Director of the BBA Program, and Dr. Suman Ahmed, Head of the CSE Department. A deeply emotional and poignant speech was given by Mr. Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, father of Shaheed Irfan Bhuiyan, on behalf of the families of the martyrs.

In their speeches, the speakers emphasized the July Uprising as a pivotal chapter in Bangladesh's ongoing struggle for justice, democracy, and the protection of civil rights. They called upon students and youth to carry forward the ideals for which the martyrs laid down their lives. A documentary film chronicling the events and impact of the July 2024 Uprising was screened as part of the program.

Discussion was followed by a Dua Mahfil, seeking prayers for the departed souls of Irfan Bhuiyan and other martyrs, and for the speedy recovery of those injured during the uprising.

It was attended by UIU faculty members, administrative officials, students, guardians, and other esteemed guests, who gathered in unity to remember and honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s democratic future.
