Tremors were felt in Dhaka, Chattogram, and other parts of Bangladesh after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Sunday at 12:25 p.m. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the epicentre was in Mandalay, near the Bangladesh border, about 597 km from Dhaka. Md Rubayat Kabir, acting officer of the Earthquake Observation and Research Centre, described it as a “major seismic event.” According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck 16 km north-northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 km. No casualties have been reported in Bangladesh so far.

The Trump administration announced on Friday that it plans to impose a steep new fee of $100,000 per year on companies hiring H-1B visa workers, sparking alarm across the U.S. tech industry. The change, set to take effect this weekend, marks one of the administration’s most aggressive efforts yet to reshape legal immigration and temporary employment visas.

The H-1B program is widely used by major tech firms to hire highly skilled workers, especially from India and China. Microsoft, Amazon, and JPMorgan quickly advised employees holding H-1B visas to avoid international travel or return to the U.S. before the deadline, according to internal emails. “H-1B visa holders who are currently in the U.S. should remain in the U.S.,” one JPMorgan advisory read.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended the move, saying American graduates should be trained instead of bringing in foreign workers. Critics, however, warn the fee could hurt innovation, force companies to shift work overseas, and weaken the U.S. in areas like artificial intelligence. “If the U.S. ceases to attract the best talent, it drastically reduces its ability to innovate,” said Deedy Das of Menlo Ventures.

India, which accounted for 71% of H-1B approvals last year, and China, with nearly 12%, stand to be most affected. Shares of firms dependent on visa workers, such as Infosys, Wipro, and Cognizant, fell sharply after the news.

Analysts say the policy could generate short-term revenue but risks long-term damage to America’s technology edge. Meanwhile, Trump also signed an executive order to introduce a “gold card” program, granting permanent residency to foreigners able to pay $1 million.

The H-1B program currently offers 65,000 visas annually, plus 20,000 for advanced degree holders, typically valid for up to six years.

Street food has never defined Gulshan, but that changed last year with the rise of Rangpur Goli, a once-quiet alley in North Gulshan 2 that now buzzes with life every night. By day, Gulshan wears its polished look of embassies, hotels, and corporate offices. But after midnight, this narrow stretch near Gulshan 2 roundabout transforms into a vibrant food haven, drawing crowds not just from the neighbourhood but across Dhaka.

The alley’s journey began 15 years ago with the humble Rangpur Tea Stall, later renamed Rangpur Confectionery. Founded by Abu Sayed Selim, it offered a range of teas, from Tk20 milk tea to exotic saffron tea, and quickly became a student and office-goer hangout. Its name stuck, and soon the alley itself became known as Rangpur Goli.

But tea alone could not satisfy night wanderers. In 2023, Rater Kebab set up grills under a tin shed, serving smoky fish and chicken kebabs that lured customers with the aroma of charred spices. Soon after, Viral Fuchka Mama joined the scene, and his doi fuchka became an overnight sensation, with sales reaching Tk90,000 on busy nights. Next came Gulshan Nehari Ghar, offering hearty stews, while newer experiments like Car Khana, a car-boot eatery selling chips makha, added novelty. Entrepreneurs such as Tahsin Jahan followed, bringing homemade tehari and kebabs, turning Rangpur Goli into a hub for car-based food ventures.

Today, the alley is packed with fuchka, kebabs, nehari, seafood, noodles, burgers, puddings, juices, and more, keeping stoves burning until 2 am under police-set rules. With its mix of tradition, innovation, and community spirit, Rangpur Goli has carved out a new identity for Gulshan, where street food thrives as much as fine dining.

A YouTube link to a Kolkata filmmaker’s documentary on Bangladesh’s July uprising has been blocked in India after the platform cited a government order tied to “national security or public order.” The film, 36 July: States Versus People, directed by Soumitra Dastidar, premiered in Bangladesh this August and was first broadcast on Ekattor TV on 4 August, according to The Times of India.

Dastidar said the film faced an initial copyright issue over a song by Sayan, which was resolved in September, allowing it to stream freely in Bangladesh. However, when he tried accessing the link from India, it showed as unavailable. The documentary includes interviews with prominent voices such as activist Badruddin Umar, journalist Tasneem Khalil, actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, Tajuddin Ahmad’s daughter Sharmin Ahmad, Dhaka University leader Meghmallar Basu, and student activist Umama Fatema. Research was led by Sahed Suvo, with cinematography by Lutfur Rahaman.

Expressing disappointment, Dastidar said, “These are strange times. In India, a film like The Bengal Files is screened under the banner of national security, while my documentary is suppressed. The contrasting treatment of two directors re-examining history has been deeply painful.”

A total of 176 Bangladeshi nationals, detained, tortured, and abducted after entering Libya illegally, were repatriated on Thursday morning via a Buraq Air flight to Dhaka.

The return was coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Of them, 172 had been held at Tajoura Detention Centre, while four were at an IOM safe house.

Most had been trafficked into Libya with false promises of reaching Europe and faced abduction and abuse. Officials urged the returnees to raise awareness against such risky journeys.

Each was provided Tk6,000, food, medical aid, and temporary shelter by the IOM. The embassy said efforts are ongoing to repatriate more Bangladeshis held in Libyan detention centres.

ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following comments the late-night host made about the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The Disney-owned network said the show would be “pre-empted indefinitely,” while Nexstar and Sinclair, two of ABC’s largest affiliate groups, announced they would not air Kimmel’s programme.

In his Monday monologue, Kimmel accused the “Maga gang” of politicising Kirk’s murder and mocked President Donald Trump’s reaction. Critics, including FCC chair Brendan Carr, called the remarks “offensive and insensitive,” with Carr urging Disney to act. Trump celebrated the suspension, declaring the show “cancelled” in a social media post.

Hollywood figures including Ben Stiller, Jamie Lee Curtis, and John Legend condemned the move, calling it censorship and a violation of free speech. The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA also denounced the decision, warning of a chilling effect on political commentary.

Kimmel, who has hosted since 2003 and fronted the Oscars four times, left his Los Angeles studio without comment. A person familiar with the situation told CNBC that he has not been fired, and network executives plan to discuss his return.

A 22-year-old suspect has been charged with aggravated murder in Kirk’s death.

Kerala health authorities are on high alert following a surge in cases of Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare but deadly brain infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, popularly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.” This year, the state has reported 61 confirmed cases and 19 deaths, many of them in recent weeks.

Health Minister Veena George described the situation as a major public health challenge. While earlier outbreaks were linked to clusters in districts like Kozhikode and Malappuram, the current pattern shows sporadic cases across Kerala. Patients have ranged in age from a three-month-old infant to a 91-year-old. “Unlike last year, we are not seeing clusters connected to a single water source. These are isolated cases, making epidemiological tracking far more complex,” she said.

Naegleria fowleri is found in warm freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. It infects people when contaminated water enters through the nose, allowing the amoeba to travel to the brain. PAM progresses rapidly and is almost always fatal, with very limited treatment options.

In response, authorities have urged the public to avoid swimming or bathing in untreated or stagnant freshwater sources. Special awareness campaigns are also being launched to educate communities on preventive steps. Health experts stress that while PAM remains rare, its high mortality rate makes vigilance critical.

The government is intensifying surveillance, strengthening lab facilities for early detection, and urging people to seek medical care immediately if they develop symptoms such as severe headache, fever, nausea, or confusion after freshwater exposure.

Barisal Divisional Forest Officer Kabir Hossain Patowary has been transferred to different districts because of his job. He is accused of marrying 17 times by using his official position. Reports say he also abused his wives over dowry.

Several of his wives complained to the senior officials of the Forest Department. When the news became public, it caused a big reaction on social media. The authorities acted quickly. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change temporarily suspended him and ordered him to be posted to the Rangpur Range.

Dr. Mohammad Zahidur Rahman Minya, Divisional Forest Officer of Patuakhali, has been appointed as acting Divisional Forest Officer of Barisal.

People in Barisal held human chains to demand justice. His relatives asked for strict punishment.

On Tuesday afternoon, a case was filed against him in Barisal court by Advocate Hafiz Ahmed Bablu, Public Prosecutor of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Spain’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup could be reconsidered if Israel qualifies, according to Patxi López, spokesperson for the Socialist Group in Congress. Speaking at a press conference, López said that at the appropriate time the possibility of Spain not attending the tournament will be considered if Israel participates.

The comments come amid renewed debate in Spain over Israel’s participation in international sporting competitions. López urged sports organizations to exclude Israel from competitions, comparing the situation to Russia’s exclusion following its invasion of Ukraine. He emphasized that the Socialist Group intends to request that the relevant authorities veto Israel’s participation. When asked if this could lead to Spain withdrawing from competitions for which it qualifies, López responded that the issue is being considered and will be addressed later.

In sporting terms, Israel remains in contention for the 2026 World Cup. The Israeli team is in a qualifying group with Italy, Norway, Estonia, and Moldova, currently holding third place with nine points after five matches. Norway leads the group, while Italy and Israel are competing for a playoff position. Israel recently lost to Italy 5-4 in a match decided in the final moments.

The two teams are scheduled to meet on October 14 in Udine in a match that could determine the future of both teams in the World Cup and potentially affect Spain’s participation in the tournament.

The Taliban government has banned fiber optic internet in Balkh province in northern Afghanistan. Officials said the move is meant to "prevent immorality." This is the first restriction on WIFI services since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

The ban has stopped internet access for government offices, private businesses, public institutions, and homes in Balkh. Mobile internet is still working.

Haji Attaullah Zaid, a spokesman for the provincial administration, said the order came from Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. He told the Associated Press that the ban aims to prevent immorality and that an alternative system will be built within the country for necessary use.

Authorities have not said why Balkh was chosen or if other provinces will face similar bans.

In the past, Afghan officials have temporarily shut down mobile networks during religious festivals or security threats, often to prevent remote detonation of explosives.
