A ten-year-old schoolgirl named Afnan has died after being hit by a stray bullet fired from Myanmar across the Whykong border in Teknaf on Sunday morning. The victim, daughter of Jasim Uddin from the Techibridge area, was a fourth-grade student at Lombabil Haji Mohammad Hossain Government Primary School. Lt. Col. Mohammad Zahirul Islam, Commander of 64-BGB, confirmed that the incident occurred around 10:00 am on January 11.
Following the incident, local residents blocked the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf highway in protest. Additional members of the Army and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The incident comes amid three consecutive days of intense clashes between the Myanmar rebel group Arakan Army and the Rohingya armed group ARSA in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, which has caused widespread panic among residents on the Bangladesh side of the border.
