Main Character: Kasem Majhi (60 years old)
Background: Buriganga River
This is a story of an old boatman’s struggle for survival amidst the toxic black water and foul smell of the Buriganga River. At the age of 60, when Kasem Majhi rows his boat while fasting under the scorching sun, the vast water around him seems like nothing but a "watery desert" - where water is everywhere, but none of it can quench his thirst.
Even in his poor household, Kasem Majhi’s greatest asset is his faith (Iman). He finds true ‘Najat’ or salvation by returning the expensive items left behind by passengers with a selfless heart. While city people enjoy grand Iftar festivals, Kasem Majhi goes from the river to a mosque and breaks his fast with just a sip of pure water. The peace in his heart, even in such a toxic environment, feels like a special blessing from the Creator.
With loneliness, back-breaking hard work, and deep love for his family, Kasem Majhi does not just cross the river; he stands as a living example of living life with honesty.
