R and Python both are great in their own way. R is the perfect language for the beginners in statistics — simple yet effective data manipulation and plotting; can be regaraded as the perfect language for anyone who wants a career purely statistics or academically related.
Python is nevertheless the business language — large, adaptable, and at the heart of data science in these modern times. Python's versatility bestows upon it applicability to real-world projects, yet its plurality of approaches may be overwhelming to a beginner.
Short of that, R is statistician's language and Python is the data scientist's language. Being fluent in both bridges the gap between theory in academic and practice in industry.
