The sociopolitical atmosphere in Bangladesh has headed towards one of confrontation, as the announcement for the date of the verdict of Sheikh Hasina's human rights violation trials approaches. It remains a developing story, as witnessed by scattered incidents of chaos and violence country-wide.

What to look out for:

A) Awami League activists demonstrating with renewed motivation.

- Party cadres should be expected to bring out simultaneous processions and even engage in unrest after the delivery of the verdict, and 13th November before that.

- Special focus should be given to whether these processions feature increased numbers compared to previous processions.

- Relentless social media campaigns.

- Disruptive actions targeting key thoroughfares.

B) Jamaat, BNP, and other Islamists engaging in physical confrontations against Awami League activists.

- JCD and Shibir have both expressly announced their intentions to confront BAL on the 13th of November.

- Jamaat’s actions following the 11th November deadline that they have set are to be noted.

- Islamist coalitions may appear on the field as catalysts.

C) Further KPI catastrophes and increased banditry.

- KPIs remain key targets of sabotage aimed at disrupting daily life and government communications.

- Increased activity of bandits, gunrunners, and notable criminals should be noted.

- Movement of illegal weapons ought to be followed to notable bandits.

D) Further Indian posturing.

- In response to construction at the Lalmonirhat Airstrip, the Indian Armed Forces have garrisoned three bases at Chopra in North Dinajpur, Kishanganj in Bihar, and at Dhubri in Assam. All of these bases are within arm's reach of Bangladeshi territory and may be expanded further.

- Further expansion of, and military exercises featuring the XVII ‘Brahmastra’ Corps in West Bengal.

- Further expansion of, and military exercises by the III ‘Spear' Corps in Assam and Tripura.

- Live-fire military exercises conducted by the Indian Air Force or its new ‘Divyastra’ artillery battery formations that combine long-range artillery with kamikaze drones.

- New media ‘hit pieces’ on Bangladesh.

- Mid-level BJP politicians delivering inflammatory speeches regarding Bangladesh.

Addendum: Recent developments as of 10th November indicate targeting of installations related to serving advisors of the Interim Government. These must be watched out for, along with incidents of communication infrastructure being targeted.

Events in Arakan have seen the escalation of military actions by factions involved in the region. The signing of a ceasefire agreement between the Tatmadaw and the Taung National Liberation Army (TNLA) was followed by a still-ongoing attempt by besieged Tatmadaw units to break out by shattering Arakan Army defenses. On the other hand, Rohingya militant groups such as the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) have been ramping up military actions. Throughout all of this, civilians have been caught up in the crossfire, leading to many deaths.

🚨 Indian Trawler Detained Inside Bangladeshi Waters

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained an Indian fishing trawler with 14 crew members after it crossed into Bangladesh’s maritime zone in the Bay of Bengal.
Officials say the boat reported engine failure, but evidence suggests possible illegal fishing. Legal procedures are underway and India has been notified.

These cross-border incidents happen often due to engine trouble, poor visibility — and sometimes intentional intrusion.

Since the landmark capture of a KNF hideout by the Army early in September, the activities of militant groups based in the Chittagong Hill Tracts have seen a general slowdown. Trafficking of all sorts, on the other hand, continues mostly unabated. The aforementioned bust highlighted the reach of cross-border arms trafficking syndicates, with illicit military-grade fi****ms and communication equipment being found inside Bangladeshi borders. Drives carried out in Alikadam and Thanchi have continued to recover communication equipment and other munitions. October 2025 also saw concerning instances of landmine explosions affecting Bangladeshi security personnel and civilians alike. Inter-ethnic and religious agitation also remains a spectre to be watched out for.

Over the month from 27 September to 27 October 2025, the Teknaf-Naf border region has seen a significant uptick in organised trafficking activity and border security incidents. Arms and ammunition seizures continue despite a drop in large-scale busts, but on the other hand, busts of human trafficking rings have picked up pace compared to previous months. Abductions by the Arakan Army have also continued. Gunfire continues to be audible just across the border, and stray bullet incidents have also occurred inside Bangladesh, causing the tense atmosphere in the region to prevail.

Anduril × Overland AI: When Air Meets Ground Autonomy

Anduril Industries and Overland AI just pulled off a real-time field test showing how drones and autonomous ground vehicles can act as one — spotting, tracking, and countering threats through a shared AI network.

In this October 2025 demo, drones identified incoming targets while Overland’s unmanned ground vehicles repositioned autonomously for overwatch. The systems shared live data and responded in sync — all supervised by human operators through one interface.

This marks a leap forward in AI-driven defense coordination, showing how cross-domain autonomy can cut response time, reduce risk, and enhance situational awareness for future missions and border operations.

De-escalation as Statecraft: Lessons from South Asia’s Border Diplomacy

Bangladesh’s calm borders in a tense region aren’t just luck — they’re the result of smart diplomacy. Through flag meetings, hotlines, and joint patrols, Dhaka has turned communication into a form of defense, preventing small skirmishes from becoming full-blown crises.

From early cooperation with India and Myanmar to regional coordination with ASEAN, Bangladesh’s approach shows how steady dialogue, transparency, and trust can keep the peace where firepower often fails.

Who we are

Bangladesh, being on the shore of the Bay of Bengal and holding a major stake in the maritime route passing through it, is a major state actor in the Southeast Asian region. Surrounded by major military powers with nuclear capability, Bangladesh has its own challenge in terms of military conflicts and terrorism. But at times, nations and organizations forget to listen to the voice of Bangladesh while talking about this region. Our goal is to let everyone know our minds and perspective.

Bangladesh Defense Journal is the pioneer and the only publication in the field of defense journalism in the country and has a broader perspective of the regional aspect of security and development. It was started in 2008 as a monthly publication. One of our biggest strength is our advisory and editorial board. The journal is popular among the military and security community within and around Bangladesh.

As a non-political journal we cover issues like Defence, National Security, Regional Security, Maritime Security, Strategic Moves, Geo-Politics, Terrorism, Insurgency etc.

We as a for-profit organization are not limited to publishing magazines only. We are capable to carry out various activities including research, surveys, round table seminar/dialogue, joint seminar, conferences, awareness programs, public hearing etc.
