ওয়াকার পিলখানা হত্য|র সাথে জড়িত ছিল বলেই হাসিনা ওয়াকার'রে সেনাপ্রধান বানিয়েছিল। জুলাই বিপ্লবে ওয়াকার এর হাতে দ্বিতীয় কোন অপশন না থাকার কারণে ওয়াকার হাসিনাকে পালাতে সাহায্য করে। এতে করে হাসিনা প্রানে বেঁচে যায়। বলা যায় ওয়াকার হাসিনাকে বাঁচিয়ে দিয়েছে। হাসিনা পালানোর আগে ওয়াকার হাসিনাকে প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন তার সকল নেতাকর্মীকে নিরাপত্তা দিয়ে দেশত্যাগ করতে সাহায্য করবেন। ওয়াকার তার প্রতিশ্রুতি রক্ষা করেছেন।
