PRESS STATEMENT

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media-BJIM expresses deep concern over the suspension of a reporter by Daily Jugantor, reportedly in connection with a recent news report.

Reporter Abdullah Al Mamun had covered a brutal, broad-daylight murder in Dhaka, in which allegations were raised against a political leader. The report clearly stated that the allegations came from the locals and included the leader’s direct denial, as quoted. Additionally, it noted that the political party’s headquarters issued a press release announcing the expulsion of several activists allegedly linked to the incident.

BJIM stresses that sensitive reports such as this undergo multiple layers of editorial scrutiny, including by subeditors and senior editors. Therefore, the unilateral suspension of the reporter raises serious concerns about due process and fairness.

BJIM is highly skeptical of this decision by the Daily. If there were any factual inaccuracies, a rejoinder or correction should have been published. Targeting the reporter appears to be an attempt to scapegoat him — a move that undermines press freedom and violates basic principles of ethical journalism.

We strongly condemn this action and urge Jugantor authorities to conduct an internal review at the editorial level, and, if the report holds editorial integrity, to reinstate Abdullah Al Mamun with full dignity and issue a public apology.

BJIM also urges all political parties to refrain from spreading intimidation among the news outlets, a regular practice by a previous regime, while many of them are already self-censoring a lot of important news items, weathering an uncertain political future.

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media-BJIM expresses deep concern over reports of certain political figures and affiliates engaging in digital harassment of specific media outlets and journalists on social media platforms. Such behaviour undermines the principles of democratic discourse and poses a threat to press freedom.

We urge all political actors to demonstrate restraint and to respect the essential role of a free and independent media. Targeted online harassment must not be normalised as a tool of political retaliation.

At the same time, we call on all media organisations to uphold the highest standards of transparency, truthfulness, and professional integrity. The credibility of Bangladesh’s news media depends on our collective commitment to ethical journalism.

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media-BJIM strongly condemns the vicious assault on journalists during a political rally in Gazipur on Saturday.

According to the journalists and eyewitnesses, a group allegedly led by a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP figure attempted to disrupt a separate BNP rally, arriving on motorcycles and armed with sticks and long knives. In the ensuing violence, they attacked the newsmen covering the event, injuring at least 12.

Jamuna TV cameraperson Rocky Hossain was beaten mercilessly; his newsgathering equipment was either smashed or stolen. Hossain is now hospitalised, and several other journalists required first‑aid treatment.

Sadly, this is the fourth such allegation of BNP activists beating journalists that BJIM has documented in recent months — evidence of a growing, alarming pattern.

BJIM demands an immediate investigation and swift justice for Hossain. We call on BNP’s central leadership to discipline its local and grassroots cadres, assume full responsibility for Hossain’s medical expenses until he recovers, and compensate Jamuna TV for the damaged and stolen newsgathering equipment.

The repetition of these attacks shows how press freedom is being eroded. A free press is essential to any democracy, and the authorities must act proactively to protect it.
