This amazing residence by Choo Gim Wah Architect is a striking example of how architecture can harmonise with nature. Nestled in the forested hills of Janda Baik, Malaysia, the residence reimagines off-form concrete within a tropical context. Designed as a private retreat for an artist's family, the home balances grounded permanence with a sense of suspended lightness as it navigates sloped terrain.
A windowless main facade doubles as a backdrop for artwork, seamlessly integrating artistic expression into the home’s design language. Over time, the raw concrete surface will weather and patinate, gradually blending with moss and vegetation. This slow transformation emphasises a long-term reciprocity between the built environment and the natural world.
The structure’s rectilinear form is softened through open-air circulation and transitional outdoor spaces, offering direct engagement with the surrounding rainforest. Key architectural features—such as a Pantheon-inspired oculus, full-height glazing, and a sweeping, undulating roof—invite natural light and frame views, enhancing the sensory experience of the landscape.
