Italian junior cyclist Samuele Privitera d*ed at age 19 after a crash during the opening stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta in north-west Italy.

He reportedly hit a speed bump on a downhill stretch, lost control of his bike and suffered a fatal head injury, BBC reported. The crash occurred 32km from the finish line. He was taken to hospital in Aosta but later d*ed.

His team manager Axel Merckx said Privitera “will always be the life and personality of this team.” Cyclist Tadej Pogacar also paid tribute, calling the loss “devastating.”

Thursday’s (17 July) stage was cancelled. The race will resume with a moment of remembrance and a neutralised section in his honour.
