Big Tech’s AI Boom Risks Undermining Its Climate Pledges

Despite bold commitments to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are now facing mounting scrutiny over their skyrocketing energy demands driven by artificial intelligence.

The rapid development and deployment of AI tools—particularly large language models and generative systems—require enormous computing power and data center capacity. According to research, training a single large AI model can emit as much CO₂ as five cars over their entire lifetime. With AI usage expanding exponentially, this raises questions about whether tech giants can meet their sustainability goals.

While companies claim they will offset emissions through renewable energy and carbon removal, experts warn that AI growth is outpacing clean energy investments. Google's data center electricity use rose 20% in 2023, while Microsoft’s AI push contributed to a 29% jump in emissions.

“There’s a real risk that AI becomes a climate liability, not an innovation driver,” says a Greenpeace analyst. The contradiction is stark: the same firms promoting AI as humanity’s next great leap forward may also be fueling a digital carbon footprint that threatens to undercut their environmental promises.

Without urgent action, AI could derail Big Tech’s climate credibility.

The Trump administration has revoked Harvard University's authorization to enroll international students, a move announced by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. This decision affects approximately 6,800 international students currently enrolled at Harvard, who are now required to transfer to other institutions or leave the United States. The administration emphasized that admitting foreign students is a privilege and warned other universities to comply with similar standards .

The revocation stems from allegations that Harvard promotes "woke" ideology and fails to address antisemitism. The Department of Homeland Security demanded records of foreign students involved in any illegal or violent activities, and failure to comply could result in the loss of the university's ability to enroll international students .

Harvard has condemned the move as unlawful and detrimental to its mission and community, pledging to support affected students. The university has indicated it will take legal action to challenge the decision .

The government is evaluating eliminating import taxes on approximately 100 products to enhance trade relations with the United States amid ongoing tariff negotiations. This proposal, discussed with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus ahead of the 2025-26 national budget, targets items including machinery, raw materials for garments, man-made fibres, and various equipment currently taxed up to 37%.

While WTO rules require these tax removals to be applied globally, the measure aims particularly to increase US imports. Of 161 identified tariff lines worth Tk28,000 crore in FY24 imports, officials expect minimal revenue impact from the planned exemptions, which generated about Tk610 crore previously.

This initiative responds to recent US tariff adjustments, including a 37% tariff on Bangladeshi products (partially suspended) imposed by the Trump administration in April. Despite the trade imbalance—Bangladesh exported $8.4 billion to the US while importing only $2.2 billion in FY24—the US remains Bangladesh's largest export market, making these negotiations strategically important.

Bangladesh's digital finance company Nagad has been placed under the supervision of the Bangladesh Postal Department following a Supreme Court Appellate Division stay order that blocked the central bank's attempt to appoint an administrator. The postal department has formed an eight-member oversight committee led by Director Abu Taleb to supervise operations and submit periodic reports.

This development resolves a protracted legal dispute that began in August 2024 when Bangladesh Bank tried to take administrative control of Nagad, a move challenged in court by current CEO Md. Shafayet Alam. The oversight transition aligns with Nagad's original public-private partnership model established in March 2019.

Alam welcomed the decision, stating it clarifies misconceptions about Nagad's structure while assuring customers of uninterrupted service. Despite regulatory challenges, Nagad continues to thrive, reporting record transaction volumes of Tk 340 billion in March 2025.

Indian tech giant Zoho has suspended its planned $400 million semiconductor facility in Karnataka state due to technology concerns. Billionaire co-founder Sridhar Vembu confirmed the decision, stating they lacked confidence in the technology and were hesitant to use taxpayer money without certainty.

The retreat represents a setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to establish India as a global chip manufacturing hub. India currently lacks any operational chipmaking facilities despite government incentives.

Zoho, valued at approximately $12 billion, had begun preparations by establishing Silectric Semiconductor Manufacturing, making key hires, and forming an oversight board. The Karnataka government had approved the project in December, expecting it to create 460 jobs in the Mysuru region.

Gautam Adani's group has also paused discussions with Israel's Tower Semiconductor regarding a $10 billion chip project.

Container Transport Strike Halts Operations at Chattogram Port
A nationwide strike by the Prime Mover, Trailer Workers Union has suspended all container transport operations at Chattogram Port and private inland container depots (ICDs) since 6am today (15 May). The indefinite work stoppage was launched in protest against the alleged assault of union president Salim Khan and two other drivers by Pahartali Police Station officials.

Approximately 7,000 prime movers operate from Chattogram Port, with around 15,000 working nationwide. The strike has completely disrupted the movement of both import and export containers, threatening Bangladesh's trade operations.

ICD Owners' Association secretary general Ruhul Amin Sikder warned that the strike endangers the daily shipment of 2,200-2,500 TEUs of export containers from ICDs to the port. Similarly, importers can no longer take delivery of the 4,000-4,500 TEUs of goods typically processed daily.

The union claims Khan and two drivers were beaten by police for refusing to transport a body. While receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, they announced an indefinite strike at a protest rally yesterday. Police have denied the allegations of assault.

Bangladesh Bank has reached an agreement with the IMF on exchange rate flexibility after meetings led by Governor Ahsan H. Mansur. The IMF will release $1.3 billion from the $4.7 billion loan package in June, previously withheld due to disagreements over implementing a crawling peg system.

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow (14 May) where the governor will join virtually from Dubai to announce the agreement. Bangladesh has already received $2.3 billion in three instalments from the total loan approved in 2023.

The upcoming disbursement combines the fourth and fifth tranches following earlier negotiations.

Bangladesh will invest Tk380 crore to repair 12 non-functional engines for its MiG-29 fighter jets, as only 6 of 20 engines are currently operational across its eight-jet fleet. Russian firm JSC NASC won the contract after negotiating from $34.1 million to $30.6 million. Payments will be phased over four fiscal years due to budget constraints.

The Air Force requires at least 16 functioning engines to maintain operations. Four jets were previously overhauled with service extended until 2030, while four others are being serviced in Belarus with expected completion by October 2025.
