A step-by-step guide to designing from scratch

You’ve got the vision, and Canva is here to bring it to life. Turn imagination into a finished design in minutes with this step-by-step tutorial for designing from scratch in Canva.

Canva’s templates provide a shortcut to good design: they’re fully customizable, so you can change the colors, images and more to suit your taste. We’ve got tens of thousands of templates for every design need.

But sometimes you need something completely custom-made. How do you ensure what you create actually looks good?

In this article, you will learn:

How to create a design from scratch using Canva
Quick tips to make your designs look good
How to choose the dimensions for your design
How to create a background for your design
How to add text, images and more
Watch the video to see for yourself how simple it is to design from scratch in Canva.

Design tip: Sketching a rough outline of your design on paper before you begin can help you bring your vision to life. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Consider what you’d like to include in the design, and where it might look best.

Ready? Let’s get started.

01. Choose the right dimensions for your design
To begin, choose your design type from the Canva homepage. These are set to the optimal dimensions for each graphic, whether it’s a social media post, flyer or more. Or you can use custom dimensions by searching for “custom size”. You can choose from pixels, millimetres or inches.

02. Choose a background
The background for your design could be a color, or an image.

Background colors

Design tip: Different colors tell different stories. Purple is associated with individuality, orange relates to activity, and green conjures images of nature. Think about what colors best suit your needs. Find a good color combination with our color palette tool.

canva colors
Of course, you can always use a white background too.

To choose a color, use the Color Picker tool in the toolbar at the top of the editor.

Background photos

To use a photo as a background, first add a grid. Once placed on a grid, photos can be resized, cropped, flipped and layered to create a variety of visual effects.

Next, search Images or upload your own. Then drag and drop your image onto the grid: it will snap to fit.

You can add filters to change the brightness, saturation and clarity of the photo. This can help when layering text and elements.

Design tip: You can add background images or feature images to your design.

A background image supports the message of the content. If there's too much going on in the background, it’s hard to overlay things like text or illustrations. When you are choosing a background image for your design, consider texture over structure. You can crop images to find pockets of texture that will work better—this way you can also remove any space or features in the image that creates too much noise.

The image below uses a close up photograph of a rose to add textural interest to the design, but its main role is to act as a vehicle for the text.

A feature image becomes the focus of your design: this image sits high in the order of visual hierarchy. Use a single, or split-cell grid to apply clever feature images and help your content sing.

The image below uses a grid to balance the visual hierarchy of the design. The user’s eye is drawn to the photograph.

3. Add your elements
Your design might include text, icons, photos or illustrations. These need to be combined in a way that is visually appealing.

Canva graphic designer Lynneal Santos says it’s a matter of balance. “Consider the balance and composition of all the elements in the design. When you're laying out your elements, ask are the elements balanced? Are they centered? And ensure they’re not too close to other elements or the edge of the page.”

Her number one tip? “Keep it simple.” Don’t overload your design with too many elements, as it can confuse the visual message of the image. This is something designers call visual heirarchy, which involves the arrangement of elements according to their importance. Try playing with size, color, and placement in order to see what works best.

If you want to add a photo to your design, try using one of Canva’s frames. You can find these under “elements” in the side panel.

Design Tip: Harness the power of negative space. Negative space, also known as white space can be any area within a design that is free from text, images, or embellishments (it doesn’t have to actually be white). Designers love it because it can help create grouping, add emphasis and improve legibility.

4. Choose the right fonts
The look of your fonts can have a huge impact on your design. Take a look at this playful typeface: perfect for a fun beauty brand. Not ideal for a law firm.

Choosing one font is hard enough. But your design may need more than one typeface. Canva suggests never using more than two fonts in a design, as too many fonts tends to make a design look “messy”. You’ll want to choose complementary fonts, which add visual interest while working well together. You can learn more about which fonts look good together with tips on font pairing.

Canva has hundreds of pre-set font combinations to choose from. You can find these in the Text tab in the side panel.

Or you can create your own combination. Again, simple is best: if you’re choosing an elaborate font, ensure you pair it with a simpler font so your design is balanced. Canva’s Font Combination tool can help, and Traditional combinations like a sans serif font and a serif font can be very powerful.

Don’t forget about readability. If your fonts are too complicated, they can detract from your message.

Design tip: Typographic hierarchy establishes the order of importance given to different design elements. By applying different fonts, color and scale to your text, you can dramatically change the way your message is received.

You don’t have to study for hundreds of hours to be good at design. But, like most things in life, you’ll get better with practice, so don’t be disheartened if your first design doesn’t turn out perfectly. Instead, keep practicing and keep creating. You’ll be creating brilliant, polished images in no time.

Bring your ideas to life in minutes.

Snapchat for Business: How to Get Started
Marketing your business on Snapchat isn’t for every company. We’re not suggesting that you sign up without a strategy, an understanding of its user base, and most importantly, a commitment to creating content that may be completely different from anything you’ve created before. That’s the first thing you need to understand: This social media platform isn't like any other platform out there. It’s about personalized messaging, real-time video, emojis and doodles, and quirky content — It’s raw and full of personality. Brand messaging that feels too professional is seen as boring on the app. If you’re not willing to think outside-the-box, experiment, and have a little fun, then it’s not the right social media marketing platform for you — at least not right now.

So why would you want to market your company on Snapchat?

There’s less competition, and therefore, you’re more likely to stand out. There’s also no algorithm hiding your posts. If a user adds your business as a friend, they can easily see that you’ve added a Story and play it. Lastly, there are few ads and no links to drive traffic away from seeing and interacting with your content.

If your company's on board with the value of building brand awareness through Snapchat, the first steps are to create an account, familiarize yourself with the interface, and set up your profile.

How to Set Up a Profile
One thing to note prior to setting up your profile is that there is almost no difference between a personal account and business account on Snapchat. The only real difference is that you need a business account to pay to launch ads on Snapchat. However, you can still market your company, build a following, and connect with followers with a personal account so you might consider testing out your Snapchat skills and learning the ins and outs with a personal account to start. (For the sake of this guide, we're going to review how to set up a personal account on Snapchat.)

Let's dive in.

First, download the Snapchat app from the App Store or Google Play.

snapchat-login

Click “Sign Up” and enter your first and last name.

snapchat-name
You must be 13 years or older to use the tool, so on the next screen it will ask for your birthday.

snapchat-birthday

Now it's time to type in your desired username. Note that your username must be unique, and it cannot be changed later on. So choose carefully and get approval from the necessary decision-makers at your company prior to selecting a username for your business.

snap-username

Next, provide your email address or phone number. Then set your password.
snapchat-password

Once your account is verified, you can set up your new profile.

Click on the ghost icon at the top of the app (or swipe down from the camera screen) to access the main menu, and then tap your Snapcode.

Screen Shot 2019-04-16 at 2.53.27 PM

Once you click the circle, the app will allow you to take up to five photos (you can make add one, static photo or create a series of five that plays on repeat when you or anyone looks at your Snapcode) to make up your profile picture.

Consider taking a photo of branded items to get your logo in the image. While you cannot upload a custom image as your profile photo, you will be able to take pictures to create a custom Snapcode picture that features your logo or brand-related image to share on social media, your website, or in promotional materials.

A lot of personal users choose to create and add a Bitmoji to their Snapcode. However, Bitmoji Snapcode images are fairly uncommon when it comes to the accounts of brands and businesses — that's because Bitmojis are emoji representations of individuals.

Aside from adding a profile picture to your Snapcode, there's another important part of it you'll want to ensure you personalize: the "code" portion of the Snapcode.

How to Create a YouTube Channel
So, you’ve decided to create a YouTube channel. Great! Now, you’ll need a YouTube Marketing strategy to help you identify goals, decide on video topics, and properly promote your brand on your new channel.

Before we dive in, it’s important to note that maintaining a YouTube channel takes a lot of time and planning. Are you ready for it?

Unlike other social networking platforms, YouTube exclusively hosts video content. You’ll need to set aside time to plan, film, edit, market, and analyze your content on a consistent basis. You’ll also need to define your brand’s goals and plan for how video can specifically help you achieve these. If you can devote an appropriate amount of time and energy to the platform, you’ll be able to create engaging, shareable content for your growing audience.

Creating a Google Account
Before you start filming video content, you’ll need to set up your YouTube channel. Because YouTube is owned by Google, when you sign up for a Gmail account, you automatically gain access to a YouTube account, a Google+ account, and much more.

Depending on your business, you may not want to tie your email to your business’s YouTube channel — especially if you need to share access to the account with team members or an agency partner. We suggest that you create a common email account that can be used by multiple people.

Step 1: Visit Google and click Sign in in the upper right-hand corner.

Step 2: Click on Create account at the bottom of the page.

Step 3: You’ll see an option pop up to create an account for yourself or to manage your business. Since your YouTube account will be for your business, choose To manage my business.

Step 4: To officially create your Google account, enter your name and desired email and password before clicking Next. Then, enter a recovery email and your birthday, gender, and phone number.

Note: Google requires all users to be at least 13 years old.

Step 5: Lastly, agree to Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service and verify your account with a code sent via text or phone call. Congrats! You’re now the proud owner of a Google account.

11 Email Marketing Tips For Your 2022 Email Marketing Campaigns

The first marketing email was sent in the late 1970s when Gary Thuerk, a marketing exec, sent a couple of hundred unsolicited emails to market his company’s computer products. More than 40 years later and a lot has changed. Now, it’s common practice to send thousands of emails in one go. Also, we hope that you never send unsolicited emails (if you do, read goal #3 closely).

Since the inception of email marketing decades ago, several new marketing channels have also emerged. Social media alone has exploded. Yet, as we’re fast approaching 2022, emails are still one of the most popular and effective ways to reach your audience.

If you’ve thought about dropping email for a newer channel – don’t. In fact, considering its ROI, if anything, you should be looking at how you can use it more effectively.

To help you, we’ve made a list of possible goals that you can set for 2022. While a number of these goals are basic email best practices that you should prioritize in any case, some of them are related to trends. Many of the trends that have shaped email marketing in 2021 will continue to play a huge role in the new year. So, if you haven’t leveraged all the trends in the past year, you’ll have another chance next year.

11 Tips for Your Email Marketing in 2022:
1. Measure Your Performance
2. Get to Know Your Audience Better
3. Be More Transparent
4. Embrace UGC
5. Employ AI
6. Incorporate Personalization
7. Be More Inclusive
8. Reward More

Pinterest Marketing Strategy: The Complete 2022 Guide

Do you want to leverage Pinterest marketing for your brand? Read this guide to learn how the Pinterest platform can help your business grow.

Did you download the Pinterest app when you were redecorating your living room and forgot that it existed for the last three years? Many people can relate to that because Pinterest was born as an ‘inspirational’ place for infinite scrolls of fruit cake recipes, jaw-dropping pictures, colorful knitting projects, and DIY tasks do delegate to your partner. It truly became a digital marketing platform through its pins feature, which made Pinterest marketing an efficient strategy for growth.

What are the pins? Pins are the digital, orderly mess of a busy desk: scribbled notes, recipes, newspaper clippings. You can create pins and add them to boards, and you can like and comment on other people’s pins and boards. Pinterest is truly a unique social media platform, and it has evolved over the years into much more than an infinite collection of beautiful images.

So who’s on Pinterest? Women in the 25-34 age group are the largest audience. This is good news since women influence 70-80% of consumer spending. Another big population on social media are moms; 8 out of 10 moms are Pinners. The men’s population is around 20% of the audience, but growing. Moreover, U.S. Millennials love Pinterest. Nearly 80% of U.S. Millennial women are on Pinterest and 40% of Millennial men, proving their loyalty to the platform. While there might not be as many young people as Snapchat or TikTok, most of the audience shows a ready-to-buy attitude. They are on Pinterest when they’re planning and making decisions.

According to Pinterest stats, 87% of Pinners have made purchases because of Pinterest. 93% of Pinterest users actively use the platform for their future purchases. They are on Pinterest when they’re planning and making decisions. And that is not all. You do not have to have a big brand name to achieve success. 97% of all Pinterest searches are unbranded, so even if you are starting from scratch, Pinterest is the platform to start advertising on.

Pinterest is now a social network, with over 450 million monthly active users and over 12 million unique worldwide. Though it’s not quite as big as the other social media giants, it still has a strong audience base, and companies should not miss the opportunity to leverage their brand on this platform. ince the Pandemic hit in 2020, Pinterest’s user base has expanded 13% QoQ. Since then, the platform’s ad UI has already increasingly improved as well.

So let’s take a deeper dive into the different ways Pinterest can help your business grow in 2022.

Why Instagram Marketing is Key to Ecommerce Success

We all know how great Instagram is for sharing photos and videos with our friends and family, but it’s also an incredible channel for ecommerce marketing. But why?

Well, an obvious reason is Instagram’s format. Because of this visual nature, Instagram holds massive opportunities for ecommerce businesses looking to showcase their products. Whether through regular photos, videos, or Instagram Stories, millions of businesses have learned that building a visual presence on Instagram can hugely compliment their ecommerce marketing.

Instagram Marketing by Herschel
There’s also the fact that Instagram users are more engaged than the average social media user. And while trends do seem to show that Instagram engagement is dropping (something we’ll be discussing in the next chapter), the platform is still producing higher engagement rates for businesses compared to both Twitter and Facebook.

But Instagram users are more than simply engaged — they’re also commonly online shoppers. According to a recent study, 72% of Instagram users report making a purchase decision after seeing something on Instagram, with the most popular categories being clothing, makeup, shoes, and jewelry.

Instagram Promotion by Maybeline
This shopping mindset makes Instagram users the perfect audience because they’re high-intent and quick to convert.

Another reason Instagram is so great for ecommerce has to do with the platform itself. As we mentioned in the previous chapter, Instagram has recently introduced a ton of new business-facing tools — and there’s definitely more to come! Whether through links in Instagram Stories or shoppable Instagram posts, soon enough many of our online shopping experiences will start (and end) on Instagram.

Successful Instagram Marketing by Shopbrando
All of this said, it would be a mistake to think that just because you don’t sell ecommerce products your business doesn’t belong on Instagram! Beyond its unique ability to move products, Instagram is also an incredible place for businesses to build brand awareness and connect with new audiences (and potential customers).

Of course, if you want to build an Instagram marketing strategy that really resonates with your target audience, you first need to understand how the Instagram algorithm works — something we’ll be discussing

Your step-by-step guide to setting up Facebook for business☺️☺️☺️

If you’re working with a limited budget, we’ve got some good news: setting up a page for your business is absolutely free.

Then, once you’ve created your Page, you can use it to create content, share your contact information, link to your website, build a product catalog and communicate with your customers… also for free.

If you do have some cash to spare (brag alert!), there’s the option to use paid marketing strategies like Facebook ads and sponsored posts from your Facebook Business Page, too.

But step one is to set that page up (did we mention that it’s free?). Here’s how:

1.Head to facebook.com/pages/create (Note: you’ll need to be logged in to your personal account to get started, but don’t worry: your personal info won’t appear on your new Business Page.)
2.Choose your page type: Business/brand or Community/public figure
3.Enter your business details.
4.Upload your profile and cover photos. Make sure to use the optimum image sizes for Facebook so they look their best.
5.Click Edit Page Info: here, you can fill in your description, contact information and any other relevant details like operating hours.
6.Click Create Page to make your vanity URL. This can be up to 50 characters long and helps people find you easily on Facebook.
7.Click Add a Button under your cover photo to set up a call to action like “Shop” or “Contact Us.”
8.Pat yourself on the back: You just launched a Facebook Business Page into the world! And she’s beautiful!
