The footage is from a 2007 documentary called Encounters at the End of the World by filmmaker Werner Herzog. In that scene, Herzog shows an Adélie penguin breaking away from its group and walking inland, a direction that offers no food or safety and would normally lead to the penguin’s death. Scientists think the penguin may have been confused, disoriented, sick, or stressed, not deliberately making a “deep life choice.”
