On July 10, 1945, a mysterious German submarine emerged from the fog near Mar del Plata, Argentina.

It was U-530, a Type IXC/40 U-boat commanded by just 24-year-old Otto Wermuth.

Instead of surrendering to the Allies, the submarine crossed the Atlantic and eventually appeared off the coast of Argentina. ⚔️ He refused to surrender. Then he disappeared into the Baltic forests.

In May 1945, N**i Germany had surrendered, and more than 100,000 German soldiers in Courland laid down their arms.

But SS-Obergruppenführer Walter Krüger chose a different path.

With a small group of loyal men, he attempted to escape west on foot through the forests of Latvia. They traveled only at night, hiding during the day as Soviet forces searched the area.

For nearly two weeks, they remained undetected.

Then, on May 22, 1945, Soviet troops found them while they were sleeping.

What happened in the next few seconds brought Krüger's story to a dramatic end.

His death remains part of the controversial and tragic final chapter of N**i Germany's collapse—and a reminder of how desperate the final days of World War II had become.

🇩🇪 The German Captain Who Hid His Rank at Stalingrad 😨 | Friedrich Winkler’s Story
🇩🇪 He was a German captain… but he wore the shoulder straps of a private soldier.

In the ruins of Stalingrad, German officers were prime targets for Soviet snipers. During the brutal fighting around the Barrikady Factory, Captain Friedrich Konrad Winkler commanded men of the 577th Grenadier Regiment.

But one detail in his October 1942 photograph stands out…

🎖️ Despite holding the rank of captain, Winkler appears to be wearing ordinary soldiers’ shoulder straps.

Was he deliberately hiding his rank to make himself harder for Soviet snipers to identify?

His uniform also carried the Iron Cross 1st Class, Black Wound Badge, and a damaged Infantry Assault Badge—silent reminders of the fighting he had survived.

But Stalingrad offered almost no escape.

After the German surrender in February 1943, Winkler was taken prisoner by the Soviet Union and died shortly afterward in captivity.

📸 His photograph survived.

And today, it offers a haunting glimpse into what the Battle of Stalingrad looked like from the perspective of one exhausted officer standing inside the ruins.

⚔️ In 1945, Waffen-SS General Kurt Meyer stood trial before a Canadian military court for war crimes committed during the Normandy campaign.
He was sentenced to death in December 1945 after being convicted in connection with the murder of Canadian prisoners of war at Ardenne Abbey and for inciting his troops to deny quarter to surrendering enemy soldiers.
But his fate changed in January 1946, when the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
