At 24, I never imagined my life would look like this. My 32-year-old husband is fighting stage 4 cancer, completely bedridden and unable to move anything except his hands. For the last five months, I’ve been his sole caregiver. I feed him, clean him, and handle everything in between.
Before all this, he was the gentlest soul. In five years of marriage, he never once raised his voice at me. He supported me through everything, always guiding me with love and patience.
And now? I catch myself snapping at him, losing my temper, and using harsh words I swore I’d never say to the person I love.
I know it’s wrong. It eats me alive every single night. But I am drowning.
I haven’t slept a full night in five months. Exhaustion has completely broken me. What makes it unbearable isn’t just his illness—it’s doing this entirely alone in a house full of family members who barely step into his room. They walk past his door, ignore his faint calls for help, and then judge me for not keeping up with the household chores.
The other day, I walked in after cooking to find his head trapped under a heavy pillow, barely able to breathe. People were sitting in the very next room, oblivious. I broke down crying right there on the floor.
Since then, I stopped doing extra chores to stay by his side. But the constant resentment and cold remarks from family keep piling up. And because I can’t fight back with them, all that unvented frustration sadly spills over onto my helpless husband.
Here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough:
We always ask how the patient is doing, but we rarely check on the person taking care of them. Caregiver burnout is real, and it destroys you from the inside out.
I don’t want pity. I just want people to realize that caregivers are human too. We need sleep, we need grace, and we need a helping hand. When you ignore the caregiver, you slowly destroy the last bit of patience they have left for the person they love.
If you know someone caring for a sick loved one, don't just ask about the patient. Ask the caregiver how they are holding up—or better yet, step in and give them an hour to just breathe.
