Lengthy Phone Call Between Trump and Putin: Russia Ready for Peace Deal.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia is ready to work on a potential peace agreement with Ukraine. The proposed deal may include terms for a ceasefire and principles for resolving the conflict.
Putin made the remarks to reporters on Monday (May 19 2025) following a phone conversation lasting over two hours with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
"We are interested in working on a possible peace agreement that would include core principles of conflict resolution, a timeline for signing the deal, and, if necessary, a temporary ceasefire," said Putin.
After the phone call, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the discussion was "very productive." He noted that both Russia and Ukraine are expected to begin talks for a ceasefire soon, stating, “Most importantly, the goal is to end the war.”
According to the Kremlin, this was a significant discussion, especially in the backdrop of recent direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine held in Istanbul. Just three days ago, during the Istanbul talks, both parties agreed on a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 individuals and decided to work on a potential ceasefire framework.
During their previous phone call on March 18, Putin and Trump discussed bilateral relations and the Ukraine crisis. At that time, Putin supported Trump’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine did not accept and continued its attacks. Russia had declared unilateral ceasefires during Easter Sunday and Victory Day, but those were not effectively upheld.
Earlier, in a February 12 phone call, the two leaders also discussed issues concerning Russia-U.S. relations and the Ukraine conflict, agreeing on the possibility of a future face-to-face meeting.
Russia’s latest announcement signals a somewhat more flexible position under international pressure, as Moscow appears to be exploring paths toward a ceasefire. However, the establishment of peace still depends on Ukraine’s stance, the role of Western allies, and the success of upcoming negotiations.
