For the first time in history, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, will be manufactured in Bangladesh. Sky Bees Ltd., a Bangladeshi company, has announced plans to produce high-tech drones aimed at commercial use and export.

These drones, used globally for various commercial and service-based purposes, are a significant development in Bangladesh’s technological landscape. Sky Bees Ltd. will set up its factory in the BEPZA Economic Zone in Mirsharai, Chattogram, investing approximately $46 million (about BDT 500 crore) for the project.

Sky Bees plans to produce 10 different models of UAVs, with production of two models starting as early as January. Once fully operational, the factory is expected to export drones worth $169 million (about BDT 2,300 crore) annually.

Managing Director Jasim Ahmed revealed that the initiative began with students from a local private university working on drone projects. Despite challenges in funding and access to components, they pressed on, eventually securing support from Jasim Ahmed. The company, formally founded in June last year, now aims to become a leader in the international UAV market, all while proudly flying the Bangladeshi flag.

This is a groundbreaking step in Bangladesh’s journey toward becoming a global tech innovator.
