Tonni Wins DUCSU Research and Publication Secretary Post by Huge Margin

Sanjida Ahmed Tonni, a well-known face of the July Movement, has been elected as the Research and Publication Secretary in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall elections. Running as an independent candidate, she secured 11,777 votes.

According to the announced results, Tonni finished several thousand votes ahead of her nearest rival. Students believe her fearless stance and activism played a major role in her landslide victory.

After six years, DUCSU elections were held again with massive student participation. Long queues were seen at polling centers throughout the day. Amid this festive atmosphere, Tonni’s triumph added further excitement among the campus community.

Umma Uswatun Rafia Elected Independent Member in DUCSU with 4,209 Votes

Dhaka University’s central student body election (DUCSU) saw an inspiring outcome this year as Umma Uswatun Rafia, an independent contestant, secured victory in a member post with 4,209 votes. Her success reflects both determination and the growing visibility of women in student politics.

In the recently concluded DUCSU election, Umma Uswatun Rafia emerged as one of the notable independent winners. Contesting outside the major student panels, she gained overwhelming support from her peers, ensuring her position as an elected member of the central student parliament.

According to the official count, she bagged 4,209 votes, defeating candidates from well-known student panels. Her victory is being hailed on social media platforms, where friends and supporters have expressed pride and optimism about her role in student leadership.

Observers note that her election indicates a growing appetite among Dhaka University students for fresh, independent voices in campus politics. At a time when panel-based polarization dominates, Rafia’s achievement symbolizes the possibility of change through individual merit and student unity.

Supporters describe her as dedicated, approachable, and strongly vocal about student rights. They expect her to play a significant role in voicing campus issues, particularly those concerning inclusivity, fair representation, and student welfare.

As DUCSU continues to serve as a platform for emerging political leaders, Umma Uswatun Rafia’s win will be remembered as an empowering milestone for women’s representation in student leadership at Dhaka University.

Shibir Gains Landslide Victory in DUCSU

After a six-year hiatus, the much-anticipated DUCSU elections finally took place yesterday across eight polling centers on the University of Dhaka campus. The event unfolded in a festive and largely peaceful atmosphere from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Reports indicate that an overwhelming majority of students turned out to vote, with more than 80% voter turnout.

Voting took place outside traditional dormitory locations—for the first time—in academic buildings such as the Senate Bhaban and the Physical Education Centre.

By late evening, counting had begun. Md Abu Shadik Kayem, backed by the Islami Chhatra Shibir-aligned panel Oikyaboddho Shikkharthi Jote, established an early lead in multiple halls and remained decisively ahead in key battlegrounds like Curzon Hall and the Geology Department.

When all votes were tallied, Md Abu Shadik Kayem emerged as the new Vice-President, securing 14,042 votes, while Abidul Islam Khan of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal came in a distant second with 5,708 votes.

For the General Secretary post, SM Farhad won with 10,794 votes, outperforming JCD’s Tanvir Bari Hamim who received 5,283 votes. Meanwhile, Md Mohiuddin Khan claimed the Assistant General Secretary position with 11,772 votes.

A Blowout Win for the Shibir-Backed Panel

The elections resulted in a sweeping victory for the Shibir-backed panel, particularly in 16 academic halls where they outpaced JCD candidates handily. Farhad’s GS victory and the significant vote gaps highlight the scale of their triumph.

While overall proceedings remained orderly, multiple complaints surfaced. Abidul Islam Khan filed a formal complaint alleging vote-rigging—referencing irregularities at Amar Ekushey and Ruqayyah halls. Simultaneously, charges of pre-marked ballots and shenanigans emerged from both pro- and anti-Shibir factions.

Many students expressed pride in exercising their democratic rights amid a charged but controlled atmosphere. Meanwhile, protest actions such as processions were held by some JCD supporters over alleged procedural violations, as tensions simmered under the surface of celebration.
