WAM
Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s Central Bank (CBUAE) announced Monday it has launched a new Dh100 banknote just ahead of the Eid Al Fitr break. Made of polymer, the Central Bank said it has used innovative designs and advanced security features while designing the banknote.

The new Dh100 banknote is part of the CBUAE’s Third Issuance of the National Currency Project. The front of the new banknote features the Um Al Quwain National Fort, a historical and cultural monument, and the reverse side features the Port of Fujairah.

Additionally, it also showcases the Etihad Rail. This railway network connects the seven Emirates and extends to the GCC countries. The design of the new banknote features various shades of red. To ensure public recognition, the CBUAE maintained the colour characteristics of the current denomination.

The new banknote will be circulated with the existing Dh100 note starting March 24. All banks and exchange houses have been instructed to programme their cash deposit machines and counting devices to ensure acceptance of these new banknotes alongside existing paper and polymer banknotes, whose value is guaranteed by law, CBUAE said in a statement.

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, said, “The new 100 dirham banknote reflects our commitment to the leadership’s vision for a sustainable future through initiatives and achievements that support Net Zero and enhance the nation’s financial competitiveness.”
He added, “Its design embodies the country’s ambitious aspirations for future progress and prosperity while honouring its historical and cultural heritage. We are pleased to announce this special issue in conjunction with the Eid Al-Fitr celebrations.”

Security features
The Dh100 banknote incorporates advanced security features as well. Moreover, CBUAE explained that polymer banknotes are more durable and sustainable than traditional paper banknotes, lasting two or more times longer in circulation. In this issue, the CBUAE said it has maintained its consideration of all banknote users by adding prominent symbols in Braille to help blind and visually impaired consumers identify the banknote’s value.

Recently, the CBUAE won the ‘Best New Banknote’ award at the 2023 and 2025 High-Security Printing EMEA conference for its Dh500 and Dh1,000 polymer banknotes.

Dubai: The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai has unveiled a groundbreaking new artificial intelligence platform, ‘Salama,’ aimed at transforming the efficiency of government services.

The announcement took place at the Fourth Annual Media Council under the theme “Media Vision Shaping the Future.” The event was attended by Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, along with senior officials and media influencers.

Salama

The “Salama” platform is designed to simplify residency services, offering a quick and seamless way for users to manage residency tasks. Through the platform, users can complete transactions, make payments, and perform other residency-related actions without the need for traditional forms or paperwork.

This innovative approach significantly enhances the service delivery of the GDRFA, supporting the UAE’s Vision 2071 and Dubai’s wider Digital Transformation Strategy.

Power of digital technology

Lieutenant General Al Marri highlighted the transformative power of digital technology in creating a future-ready Dubai. “Digital transformation is not just about building services; it’s about redefining customer experiences, improving government performance, and fulfilling the visionary leadership’s goal of providing more accessible, efficient services,” he remarked.

He also stressed that “Salama” is a testament to the GDRFA’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to improve the quality of life in Dubai.

Simplifying visa processes

The platform’s services are aimed at simplifying residency processes for individuals. Among its features, “Salama” allows users to renew or cancel residency permits, receive quick responses to visa inquiries, and complete transactions without navigating multiple systems or visiting service centres. These enhancements make the platform a highly efficient and user-friendly tool. They service will be extended for companies in future

Major shift

Colonel Khalid bin Madia Al Falasi, Assistant Director General of the Digital Services Affairs Sector at GDRFA Dubai, shared further details on the platform’s capabilities. “The launch of the ‘Salama’ AI platform marks a major shift in how users engage with government services,” he stated.

“Using sophisticated algorithms, the platform tailors responses to individual needs, offering quick, accurate service.

He told Gulf News that the new service is currently available for individuals, primarily to renew or cancel residency permits. In the next phase, it will be extended to include companies.

How to use it

The service can be accessed via the smart channel and through UAE Pass. During the forum, the department demonstrated the transaction live, which was completed in just a few seconds. One applicant used the service to renew the residency permit for a family member.

The customer used the platform to renew the residency permit for his daughter. After logging in, the system automatically recognised the applicant's data and displays the details of any dependents under their sponsorship, showing the duration of each dependent's stay.

The customer then selected the renewal option. The AI retrieved the necessary information and processed the request, after which payment was made. The renewed visa is then sent directly to the customer's registered email.

Colonel Al Falasi said the service is offered in more than 40 lanauages and more will be added in future. He said each transaction takes only 10-20 seconds.

How it works

Through Salama, residents can renew their visas in under 10-20 seconds only by visiting the smart channels and accessing the services through UAE PASS.

The AI-powered system automatically pulls user data and simplifies the process into three easy steps:

Canada lets officials cancel study, work visas; thousands of Indians may be hit
Ottawa's new immigration regulations have granted Canadian border officials greater authority to cancel study and work permits under specific conditions. The move could affect thousands of Indian students, workers and tourists in Canada. With the suspension of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme months ago, Canada's stricter oversight may cause delays, financial losses, and uncertainty for thousands of Indians.

Canada has introduced big changes to its immigration regulations. The new Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, which came into effect on January 31, authorise border officials to cancel temporary resident documents such as electronic travel authorisations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs).

The new regulations are likely to impact thousands of foreign nationals, including Indians, annually. The changes will impact students, employees, and temporary resident visitors, many of whom are from India.
Canada is a top destination for Indian students opting to pursue their higher education abroad. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), there are around 4,27,000 Indian students studying in Canada.

The amended rules follow a series of changes to Ottawa's immigration framework, including the cancellation of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme in late 2024.

CANADIAN BORDER OFFICIALS CAN CANCEL VISAS ON SEVERAL GROUNDS
The amended rules give Canadian immigration and border officers enhanced authority to cancel eTAs, TRVs, work permits, and study permits under specific circumstances. These include cases where:

An individual’s status or circumstances change, making them ineligible or inadmissible, such as providing false information, having a criminal record, or being deceased.
An officer is not convinced that the individual will leave Canada upon the expiration of their authorised stay.
The document is lost, stolen, destroyed, or issued based on an administrative error.
A temporary resident becomes a permanent resident.

The changes also enable officers to cancel TRVs, eTAs, work permits and study permits issued to people when

They become a permanent resident.
They are deceased, or
The document was issued based on an administrative error.
According to the amended rules, students, including those from India, can have their immigration papers cancelled if they are denied a work or study visa. The policy also guarantees that the immigration and border authorities are the only ones who can cancel these visas, to avoid any unauthorised intervention.

IMPLICATIONS FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS AND STUDENTS
The amended rules would result in the cancellation of approximately 7,000 additional temporary resident visas, work permits, and study permits, according to reports.

Foreigners, including Indians, whose permits are cancelled could face issues, including being prohibited from entering Canadian ports or having to leave Canada.

Apart from the 4,27,000 students studying, Canada also sees lakhs of tourists from India annually. Between January and July 2024, Canada issued 3,65,750 visitor visas to Indians, which was more than the 345,631 issued during the same period in 2023.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has indicated that individuals who are impacted will be informed via their IRCC account or email, but there are still concerns regarding the potential financial losses of travellers and students who have their documents cancelled.

CANADA CONTINUES TO TIGHTEN IMMIGRATION POLICY

These changes to the rules are in line with Canada's strategy to tighten immigration rules.

Only a few months ago, in November 2024, Canada suspended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program, which Indian students preferred to avail themselves of to study in Canada.

The SDS began in 2018 and accelerated visa processing for students from some countries, including India, by requiring them to demonstrate money upfront, such as tuition fees and guaranteed investment certificates (GICs) for living expenses.

At first, people worried that cancelling SDS would cause delays. But officials clarified that students would continue to be able to apply for the Regular Study Permit, under which they can pay tuition in instalments. However, international students, including Indians, could face more problems with the new rule for the cancellation of temporary resident documents.

Under the new rules, if study permits are revoked, students will have trouble finishing their studies or moving to work permits after graduation.
