Unseen Passage for class Four & Five

i) There lived a farmer in a village. He had a wonderful goose. The goose laid an egg of gold every day. The farmer was very greedy. He thought that there were many eggs in the belly of the goose. He wanted to have all the eggs at a time. Thus, he wished to be rich. One day he hit upon a plan that he would kill the goose and get all the eggs of gold from its belly. Then he would sell the eggs and become rich at once. The farmer told his wife about his plan. His wife was wise but not greedy. She said to her husband, “Don’t be greedy. Be happy with what we’ve.” But the farmer did not listen to his wife. He killed the goose with a sharp knife. Then he cut open its belly. But alas! He found no egg in it. Thus, the greedy farmer lost his useful goose.

ii) Once, a hungry fox was searching for food in the forest. After a while, he came to a vineyard. He was very tempted by the sight of grapes. But grapes were hanging very high from the branches of the trees. The fox wanted to have a good dinner then. He said to himself,” If I can jump high enough, I shall have a good many of them.” Thinking so, he jumped to have some of these grapes. He tried his best to reach the grapes, but he could not. He jumped over and over again. The more he jumped, the more tired he became. At last, he became very tired and could no longer jump. Then he realized that the grapes were out of his reach. He became frustrated and gave up trying to get the grapes. He only looked at them with his greedy eyes, and after a while, he went away saying, “Grapes are sour. They are not worth eating.

iii) Once there was an old farmer who had three sons. Though they were grown-ups, they had no good relationship with one another. They were dishonest and always quarreled with one another. This made the farmer very anxious. So, he wanted to teach his sons. At last, he hit upon a plan. He called all his sons and asked them to bring a bundle of sticks. Accordingly, they brought a bundle of sticks. Then the farmer asked them to break it. The three sons tried one after another. But none could break it. Then their father asked them to untie the bundle and told each of his sons to take one stick. Each of the boys took one stick. Their father asked them to break the sticks. Now they broke them easily. Then the farmer told his sons, “If you live together, nobody can harm you, and if you are separate, anybody will break you like the single broken sticks.”

iv) Once there were two friends. They lived in a certain village. they promised that they would help each other in time of danger. one day they were passing through a deep forest. Suddenly they heard a loud sound. it was a bear. so ,both of them were afraid and were at a loss what to do. One of them knew how to climb a tree. he left his friend in danger and took shelter on a tree. The other friend was helpless suddenly an idea came up in his mind. he knew that the bear doesn't eat any dead animal .without finding no way he decided to pretend to be dead. according to his plan he laid on the ground like a dead one.at last the bear came and found him lying on the ground the bear smelt the body and considered him to be dead. it went away without doing any harm .when the bear went away his friend got down from the tree. he asked what the bear had whispered to him. the friend replied that bear forbade him to keep company with such a friend who left his friend in danger. Hearing this his friend felt ashamed and went away...
v) Once there lived a poor woodcutter in a village near a forest. He earned his living by cutting wood honestly. One day, while cutting a tree near a river, his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the deep water. The woodcutter became very sad because the axe was his only means of earning. He sat by the riverbank and began to cry. Hearing his cries, a fairy appeared before him and asked the reason for his sorrow. The woodcutter told her the truth. The fairy went into the water and brought out a golden axe, but the woodcutter said it was not his. She then brought a silver axe, but again he refused. Finally, the fairy brought his old iron axe. The woodcutter happily accepted it. Pleased with his honesty, the fairy rewarded him with all three axes. Thus, honesty is always rewarded.
vi) Once upon a time, an ant lived near a river. One hot day, the ant went to the river to drink water. While drinking, it slipped and fell into the river. The strong current of water carried the ant away. The ant struggled hard to save itself, but it seemed helpless. A kind dove was sitting on a tree beside the river. She noticed the ant in trouble and felt pity for it. At once, the dove plucked a leaf from the tree and dropped it into the river near the ant. The ant climbed onto the leaf and floated safely to the riverbank. The ant thanked the dove for saving its life and promised to help her in return someday. A few days later, the ant saw a hunter aiming his gun at the dove while she was sitting on a branch. The ant realized that the dove was in danger. Without wasting any time, the ant bit the hunter’s foot sharply. The hunter cried out in pain and missed his aim. Hearing the noise, the dove flew away safely. Thus, the dove was saved by the ant. The story teaches us that kindness is never wasted and even a small creature can help in times of need.
vii) It was a rainy day. A fox was sitting on the bank of a river. He was thinking. His friend Jeremy was calling him from the other side of the river. Jeremy was calling loudly to go to him. But he did not go. At that time a crocodile came to him. The fox asked the crocodile, “Could you help me cross the river?” The crocodile said, “oh sure, please sit on my back. The fox sat on his back and they began to cross the river. After sometime they reached the middle of the river. The crocodile said,” I want to eat you now.” The fox become very afraid. He said, “There are many foxes waiting on the other side of the river. They are healthier than I am. I will help you eat them all.” The crocodile agreed with the fox and started swimming again. After sometimes they reached the other side of the river. The fox jumped up to the river side and said ‘Oh crocodile, you are a fool. Now go back,” Said the fox.
viii) One hot summer day, a crow was feeling very thirsty. It flew from place to place in search of water but could not find any water. All the ponds and ditches have dried up. The crow flew a long distance and was tired. Suddenly, he saw a pitcher under a tree. The crow flew down and sat on the pitcher. He looked into the pitcher. There had a little water. But the crow could not reach it. He looked around and saw some pebbles. He picked up the pebbles one by one with his beak and dropped them into the pitcher. Slowly, the water level rose higher and higher until it reached the top. Soon, the water came up to the mouth of the pitcher. The crow drank the water and flew away happily.
ix) A lion was asleep in the sun one day. A little mouse came out to play. The little mouse ran up the lion’s neck and slid down his back. The lion caught him with a great big smack! ‘I’m going to eat you!’ the lion roared, his mouth open wide. ‘No, no, please don’t!’ the little mouse cried. ‘Be kind to me and one day I’ll help you.’ ‘I’m a lion! You’re a mouse! What can you do?’ The lion laughed, very hard, and the mouse ran away. But the mouse was out walking the very next day. He heard a big roar, and squeaked when he saw the king of the jungle tied to a tree. But the mouse had a plan to set him free. The mouse worked quickly and chewed through the rope. The lion said, ‘Oh little mouse, I had no hope. You were right, little mouse – thank you, I’m free. You’re the best friend there ever could be!’
x) Sumon and Saba are the students of class five of a primary school. They are little doctors of their school. They were selected by the students of their school. Every year in April and October, 5 to 12 years old children have to take de-worming medicine. At the same time all the family members also have to take the same medicine. To ensure all the students are there on the exact date, Sumon and Saba go to all the classes. They help to give he de-worming medicine to students. They make sure to use pure drinking water when taking medicine. They tell the students to take the medicine after a good meal. They fill up the information form of which classes have had the medicine. They also take the weight and height of each student in every year. The keep all the date on a class form. Sumon and Saba are always ready to give the primary treatment to any student, if necessary. They have a first aid box in their school. In that box they have some cotton, antiseptic balm, etc. They always look after the health conditions of the students.
xi) Meena and Raju live in a small house with their parents Rebeka and Kalam. Meena is Raju's elder sister. Meena reads in class 5 and Raju in class 3. They are very regular students in their school. They do good results in examination. Their teachers like them very much. They have a pet parrot named Mithu. Mithu is a good and clever bird because it copies or try to copy everything they say. When they comeback from school, the parrot becomes happy. It is like a good friend. It plays with them. Meena's father Mr. Kalam works in a factory. He works hard. Meena's mother Rebeka is a housewife. She helps her husband and her children. She cooks food and does the washing for the family. She also teaches her children at home. They all work hard. They are a happy family.
xii) Bangladesh is our motherland. It is an independent country. The independence of Bangladesh was declared on the 26th march, 1971. We got our victory on the 16th December, 1971 after a long war. Bangladesh is a small country with a large population. Most of the people of the country are Muslims. The land of this country is so fertile that people can grow crops easily. Most of the people of this country are farmers. The main cro of this country is rice. But the farmers grow jute, sugarcane, tea and fruits also. Jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is also a country of rivers. There are so many rivers in this country. The Padma, the Meghna and the Jumuna are the main rivers of the country. Hilsha is our national fish.

xiii) Bayazid Bostami was a small boy. His mother was ill. One night the entire village was in deep sleep. He was studying by the side of the bed of his ailing mother when she woke up and asked for a glass of water. Bayazid immediately got up and went to fetch water. However, the house was out of water, and the pitcher was empty. Determined to fulfill his mother’s wish, he went to the nearby well to draw water. The night was dark and cold, but Bayazid didn’t hesitate. After filling the pitcher, he carefully returned home. When he reached, he found his mother had fallen asleep again. Not wanting to disturb her, he stood there holding the glass of water in his hands, patiently waiting for her to wake up. Hours passed, but Bayazid didn’t move. At dawn, his mother woke up and was astonished to see her son still standing with the glass of water. Tears welled up in her eyes as she realized the depth of his love and respect for her. She blessed him from the core of her heart, and it is said that her blessings and his devotion played a significant role in shaping Bayazid into the great saint he eventually became.
xiv) Once upon a time there was a city named Hamelin in Germany. The life of this city's people were very intolerable because of rats. The number of rats were more than people. Rats snatched food from children. They also started bit and fought with people. The life became worsen day by day. One day they all gathered their hallroom for discussing this matter with their leader and find out the way of free from rats. They started discussing but don't find out any way then a stranger came and said I will remove all rats from your city . What I will gain for that work? The leader announced 100 gold coins for that work. Then the stranger said "ok" and came out from this room and take out a pipe from his bag. The pipe is very strange. He started to playing pipe in his own mind and started walking to the river. Listening his pipe's sound all rats of this city came out and followed him. When he sanded in the river side all rats jumped in the river. The people of this city saw all incidents. They became wondered. Then the stranger came back the hallroom and demanded his coins then the leader said it was so easy work so you don't deserves so. I pay you 500 silver coins. Listening this words the stranger came out from the room and take out another pipe and started playing. Listening his pipe's sound all children of the city come out from their room and started following him. The stranger walking through the hill and never came back. All parents saw this incidents but no one did anything.
xv) It was a hot summer day. A man was passing through a village. He sold caps to the villagers. He walked for miles and felt very tired. He sat under a big tree to take rest. He put his basket of caps beside him. He then felt asleep. There were monkeys in the tree. The monkeys saw the caps in the basket. They became curious. The monkeys came down from the tree and took away the caps. After sometime, the man woke up. He found that there was no cap in the basket. He was surprised. He looked for the caps. Then he heard some sound above his head. He looked up. He could not believe his eyes! The monkeys were wearing the caps. The cap-seller became very worried. He did not know what to do. Suddenly he remembered that monkeys like to imitate. So he took off his own cap and threw it on the ground. The monkeys saw it. They also threw their caps on the ground. The cap-seller did not miss the chance. He at once collected the caps from the ground. Then he quickly left the place.
xvi) Once, there was a cowboy who would take his cows to a field near a forest. He often felt lonely and bored. One day, he thought of a trick to have some fun. He shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! Help me, please!” Hearing this, the villagers came running to help him. But there was no wolf. The cowboy laughed and said, “Ha Ha! I fooled you all!” The villagers became angry and went back. After a few days, he played the same trick again. The villagers came, but again there was no wolf. They scolded him and left. One day, a real wolf came and attacked his cows. The cowboy cried, “Help! Wolf! Please help me!” But no one came this time. The wolf killed many cows, and the cowboy cried in regret.
