BNP selects Salauddin for Dhaka-5, Rezaul Naogaon-6
---------------------
Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday selected Salauddin Ahmed and Sheikh Mohammad Rezaul Islam as the party’s candidates for Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 respectively for the by-elections scheduled to be held on October 17.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names of the two party candidates after a day of meetings at the Gulshan office of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Salauddin Ahmed is the business affairs secretary of the party’s central executive committee and Rezaul Islam is a member of the party’s Naogaon district committee.

A total of 29 people submitted their forms to the party office on Friday seeking nominations to contest in the parliamentary by-elections.

Out of them, 24 candidates appeared in the virtual interview.

The nomination board, comprising of the standing committee members of the party, was chaired virtually by acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman from London.

The EC schedules for Dhaka-18 and Siranjganj-1 have not been announced yet.

Last week, the party nominated Habibur Rahman Habib as its candidate for Pabna-4 by-elections which will be held on September 26.

A member of media cell of the party chairperson, Shayarul Kabir Khan, told The PressDesk Today that candidates for Dhaka-18 and Srajganj-1 would be announced later.

JP demands COVID-19 treatment facilities at all govt hospitals
----------------------
Jatiya Party chairman GM Quader on Monday demanded COVID-19 treatment facilities at all government hospitals across the country.

Addressing a programme organised by the by JP Dhaka city north unit, GM Quader said that the government was claiming that most of beds of the COVID-19 treatment units remained vacant but news reports showed that people were not getting treatment.

‘We are in dilemma whether the COVID-19 infection in the country was decreasing or increasing,’ he said adding that lack of coordination of the health ministry was evident.

GM Queder also said that the poor must get COVID-19 vaccines for free when the country would get it from any foreign country.

‘We are convinced with prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech that she delivered in the Parliament that the country was trying to get the vaccine from all possible sources. But, we want assurance from the government that all the poor will get it for free,’ Quader said.

‘Otherwise, the rich people will be able to purchase it while the poor will remain out of the vaccine coverage,’ he added.

Quader also distributed money among the needy and sick people at the programme organised at his Banani office.

JP presidium members Faysal Chisty, Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan, JP vice chairman Mostafa Al Masud , among others were present at the programme.

RMG exporters, experts cautiously optimistic
----------------------------------
The country’s readymade garment exporters and economists said that they were cautiously optimistic about the positive growth of export earnings in the coming months as Bangladesh was yet to overcome the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

Although the world economy is recovering, it might take more time for exports to rebound as the second wave of the pandemic has started causing further damage to businesses in some European countries, they said.

Experts and exporters also said that possibly Bangladesh’s export earnings from RMG would rebound but not in the near term as the second wave of the pandemic had started to create problems on the demand side.

‘We have to explain all the things in a practical way. No doubt the increase in export earnings in the last two months was a positive development but we are still in negative growth,’ Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh executive director Ahsan H Mansur told The PressDesk Today on Saturday.

He said that orders received in April and May were produced by exporters in June, July and August due to the pandemic.

Mansur said that the world economy was still recovering and they were cautiously optimistic about the rebound in export growth in the coming months.

He, however, thought that it would take time for that to happen until a vaccine came as the second wave of the pandemic was hurting demand in some countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Spain.

He hoped that the world might get a solution to COVID19 in the early part of next year and then exports would pick up.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association former vice-president Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu said that the export earnings might fall in September and October compared to July and August as the buyers had placed 20 per cent less orders than last year.

He said that both orders and prices had fallen due to the pandemic while the second wave of the virus, which had already begun in some EU countries, was affecting Bangladeshi apparel products further.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association first vice-president Mohammad Hatem said that it would take time to assess the trend in export as the earnings of the last two months were based on revived orders which were cancelled or halted due to the pandemic.

‘We are worried about global buyers placing orders at slow rates and decreased prices. I do not think the situation will improve in the next three-four months,’ he said.

It will take a few months for a good thing to happen as the second wave of the pandemic has made the buyers more cautious about placing orders, Hatem said.

Australia seeks business partnership in Bangladesh
--------------------------------------
The Australian High Commission in Dhaka on Monday sought proposals to support COVID-19 economic recovery in Bangladesh under the Business Partnerships Platform.

The BPP is a flagship initiative of the Australian Government.

It supports partnerships with businesses to deliver sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction, while also ensuring commercial returns for business.

“Businesses will play an important role in building back better from COVID-19. In Bangladesh, this opportunity for businesses to partner with the Australian Government will help build livelihood opportunities, enhance gender equality, and support resilient economic recovery,” said Jeremy Bruer, Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

The BPP can co-finance with businesses to support COVID-19 economic recovery by establishing partnerships which contribute to digitalisation and ICT, skills development for workers and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, economic opportunities for women, or green recovery.

In Bangladesh, they are seeking partnerships in a number of sectors: agriculture and agricultural technology, banking/financial inclusion, clean energy and energy efficiency, textiles and manufacturing.

Businesses can apply individually or in a consortium.

The Australian Government will provide matched funding of up to AUD 500,000 to successful business initiatives.

Businesses with a commercial idea that could make a lasting social impact are encouraged to contact the Australian High Commission in Dhaka or visit: www.thebpp.com.au for further information.

To participate in an information session, interested persons can register online at https://thebpp.com.au/call-forpartnerships/regional-call-for-partnerships.
