The Woolwich Rotunda started life as a tented ballroom for the Prince Regent in Westminster, London. 🎪

It dates back to 1814 and was designed by renowned architect John Nash for the future King George IV. It was dismantled and rebuilt as a permanent structure at the Royal Military Repository training grounds in Woolwich in 1818.

The Rotunda opened as an artillery museum in 1820, making it one of the earliest of its kind in the world.

After 180 years as a museum, it closed to the public in 2000. Structural issues and conservation challenges have meant that both the building and its landscape have been on our Heritage at Risk Register for some time.

Last week, I followed the Nevada, California, and Oregon Railway from Reno to Lakeview, Oregon. I'm not a foamer, someone who foams at the mouth when they talk about trains. (Seriously, it is a real term, look it up!🤣)
However, I love the N-C-O, and it is my all-time favorite railroad. How can you not love stories of this infamous line, including mismanagement, shootouts, herding rabbits, a historical murder trial, and a party prank which sent the Governor of Nevada running for the sagebrush?
The various shenanigans earned the line the nicknames "Northern California Outrage" and "Narrow, Crooked and Ornery."
Today, you can follow much of the infamous railroad's route from Reno, Nevada, to Lakeview, Oregon.

Before & After ~ Finding Hidden Treasure in New Orleans.
I spotted this project underway in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans in 2023. It is an excellent example of how past alterations often hide important character-defining features under modern finishes -waiting to be rediscovered and restored. I got the photo of the nearly completed project when I was there in January this year.
The image on the left is from Google Streetview and shows the house before selective demo exposed what remained hidden - essentially the entire historic double gallery (porch) with turned, scroll-cut, and stick and bead trim elements. Other than the second-story railing, it was all still there, including the wonderful brackets supporting the gallery roof.
How to analyze changes to a house over time for clues to what might be hidden is covered in Chapters 2 and 3 of "Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners." Chapter 6 addresses selective demolition and how to uncover hidden historic elements without destroying them.

Maine's Castle Tucker is one of the most beautiful and historic "castle-style" homes in the state. Perched high above the Sheepscot River in Wiscasset, ME...it was originally built for Judge Silas Lee, but the house changed forever when seafaring merchant Richard Tucker Jr. bought it in 1858. He and his wife Mollie added Victorian features, including a massive three-story piazza with sweeping river views. As Tucker’s fortunes rose and fell, Mollie kept the household afloat...raising five children and preserving the home’s character. Today, Castle Tucker remains frozen in time, filled with original furnishings, bold wallpapers, and a rare 1905 Crawford stove. It’s one of Maine’s most intact Victorian-era family homes.

This prominent Beaux-Arts home, built in 1901, was designed by Macon, GA, architect Alexander Blair III for Wallace E. McCaw, president of the soap and oil producing Macon Manufacturing Company. McCaw is credited with creating the vegetable shortening Crisco. The product is so closely associated with the house that legend says the pale yellow brick used on the exterior of the home was meant to mimic blocks of Crisco. The interior of the house had previously been divided into apartments and the goal of the rehabilitation was to bring it back as a single-family home while restoring decorative features that had been lost over time. The City Hall of Buffalo, New York, completed in 1931, is widely regarded as an Art Deco masterpiece. Designed by architects John Wade and George Dietel, this 32-story skyscraper showcases the era's bold geometric patterns, vertical emphasis, and ornate detailing. Its facade features intricate terra-cotta work, including stylized eagles, buffalo motifs, and sunburst designs, reflecting the optimism of the 1930s despite the Great Depression. The interior boasts a stunning lobby with colorful murals by William de Leftwich Dodge, depicting Buffalo's history and industry, alongside polished marble and brass accents.

Standing at 398 feet, it was the tallest city hall in the U.S. at the time and remains an iconic landmark. The building's design blends functionality with artistic flair, embodying Art Deco's celebration of modernity and progress. Since you asked about "history" without specifying a topic, I'll provide a brief overview of a significant historical event up to the current date, July 21, 2025. One notable recent development is the continued advancement of artificial intelligence, with xAI's release of Grok 3 marking a milestone in accessible AI technology earlier this year. This reflects a broader trend of rapid technological progress shaping global industries.
