The China Global Philanthropy Institute (CGPI) celebrated its 5th anniversary. At the ceremony, they appointed a new director, Mr. Ai Luming, and a new President, Mr. Yan Jun. They paid tribute to promoters, witnesses and supporters. Since 2015, the CGPI has been the first independently registered philanthropy institute in China and has worked to reform and open to innovation and exploration of global philanthropic development.

The United Nations and African Union withdrew from their 13-year peacekeeping mission in the Sudanese region of Darfur. Since ethnic minority rebels rose up against the Arab-dominated government, retaliation and violent clashes have plagued residents for years. The phased withdrawal will leave the responsibility of protection of civilians to the Sudanese government. Although conflict has subsided in recent years, the fragile government and periodic clashes sparked protests in support of UN protections.

President Vladimir Putin has plans for a naval base in Sudan to capitalize on the geopolitics of the Red Sea, with mooring capabilities for at least four nuclear-powered ships, in exchange for supplying weapons and military equipment to Sudan. This move strengthens the Kremlin’s footprint in Africa and to rival US military presence. The military expansion echoes strategies from the Cold War and previous investments in Africa as well as the risk of overreaching themselves.
