Rangpur City is one of the main cities of Rangpur division and one of the oldest municipal corporations of Bangladesh established in 1869. Rangpur city was recognized as Divisional Headquarters on December 16, 1769. In 1890, the king of the district's district landowner Janakiballav Sen, in the Rangpur town, renovated canal in the name of his mother Chowdhurani Shyamasundari Devi, today the Shyamasundari canal is known as the today's municipal building in 1892 AD. রংপুর বাংলাদেশের রংপুর বিভাগের অন্যতম প্রধান শহর এবং ১৮৬৯ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত বাংলাদেশের প্রাচীনতম পৌর কর্পোরেশনের একটি। রংপুর শহর ডিসেম্বর ১৬, ১৭৬৯ সালে বিভাগীয় সদর দপ্তর হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি লাভ করে। ১৮৯০ সালে তৎকালীন পৌর কর্পোরেশনের চেয়ারম্যান ডিমলার জমিদার বাড়ির রাজা জানকীবল্লভ সেন রংপুর শহরে জলাবদ্ধতা নিরসনে তার মা চৌধুরানী শ্যামাসুন্দরী দেবী'র নামে যে ক্যানাল্টি পুনঃখনন করেন তাই আজকের শ্যামাসুন্দরী খাল নামে পরিচিত এবং তাঁর দানকৃত বাগান বাড়ির জমিতে ১৮৯২ খৃষ্টাব্দে আজকের পৌরসভা ভবনটি গড়ে ওঠে।
