More than four million chickens in Iowa are set to be killed following the detection of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu at a commercial egg farm in Sioux County, the state announced on May 28.
Crews are culling 4.2 million chickens in Sioux County, the latest case in a yearslong outbreak now affecting dairy cattle. Last week, nearly 1.4 million chickens were culled at a farm near Minneapolis, Minnesota, due to the virus.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a total of 92.34 million birds have been culled since the outbreak began in 2022.
There have been three human cases of bird flu in the U.S. since 2022, linked to bird and dairy exposure.
