Look closely at this photo. A Pan Am 747, parked and ready for departure, with the Twin Towers standing in the background. Two of the most powerful symbols of 20th-century American ambition — and neither one is still here. ✈️

Pan Am wasn't just an airline. It epitomized the luxury and glamour of intercontinental travel, and for decades that blue globe on the tail meant something. Then, on December 4, 1991, after 64 years of pioneering global aviation, it was gone for good — a casualty of deregulation, debt, and the Lockerbie bombing three years earlier.

The Twin Towers needed no introduction either. They defined the Manhattan skyline for anyone flying into New York — the first thing you looked for on approach. 🗽

Neither one saw the 2000s. Pan Am folded in '91. The towers fell in 2001. This photo exists in that narrow window where both were still real — one jet sitting on the tarmac, one skyline standing tall behind it, neither one knowing what was coming.

That's what makes a still, quiet ramp photo like this hit so hard. It's not an action shot. It's a snapshot of a moment that felt completely ordinary at the time — and now it's the last kind of ordinary either one ever got. 💙

Being a flight attendant isn’t always the modestly paid job many passengers might imagine. At the top end of the US industry, some experienced cabin crew can push their annual earnings above $120,000.

United’s new contract pays flight attendants with 13+ years of service $87.47 per flight hour, while Delta’s top rate is around $86.32. Boarding pay, per diem, premium trips and other compensation can push earnings higher still.

For perspective, a US Government Accountability Office analysis found first-year first officers at selected regional airlines averaged roughly $93 per flight hour in 2024. That puts the hourly rate of America’s most senior flight attendants surprisingly close to some professional pilots starting their careers.

That doesn’t mean they’re earning anything like senior United or Delta captains, and $120,000 isn’t guaranteed. Seniority, schedules and additional flying make an enormous difference.

But the numbers keep climbing. Under United’s current agreement, its top flight-attendant rate is scheduled to reach $100.13 per flight hour by 2030.

Not quite captain money, but definitely entering pilot territory.
