"Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya" is a beautiful and meaningful supplication (dua) that Muslims recite before going to sleep. It is a powerful reminder of our reliance on Allah for everything, even for the most fundamental aspects of our existence.
Meaning and Significance
The phrase translates to: "O Allah, with Your Name, I die and I live."
* "I die" refers to the state of sleep, which is often described as a temporary death or a lesser death.
* "I live" refers to the act of waking up and being granted another day of life.
By reciting this dua, a person acknowledges that both their sleep (a form of "death") and their awakening (a form of "life") are entirely in Allah's hands. It is an expression of complete trust and submission to His will. This simple act turns the everyday routine of sleeping into an act of worship, reminding us that every moment of our life, including rest, is a gift from God.
When to Recite It
According to the Sunnah (the practice and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him), this dua is recited right before going to bed. The Prophet (PBUH) would often place his right hand under his right cheek while reciting it.
Dua upon Waking Up
The hadith (saying or tradition of the Prophet) that mentions this dua also includes the one to be said upon waking up. It is a beautiful continuation of the nightly supplication.
Upon waking up, the Prophet (PBUH) would say:
"Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur"
This translates to: "All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having caused us to die, and to Him is the return."
This pair of supplications frames the entire night's rest in the remembrance of Allah, starting with a declaration of submission before sleep and ending with gratitude upon waking.
