For small businesses, Facebook can be a logical place to experiment with paid advertising without the risky investment of a lot of time and money. The social media giant offers an easy way for even the smallest companies to quickly start a targeted ad campaign, displaying business content to Facebook users while they browse the site. Businesses can, for instance, create ads to direct new fans to a page, ensure that more users see certain posts or send viewers to their websites.

As with most pay-per-click campaigns, businesses set a budget for how much they are willing to spend over a set period. Costs run the gamut, but on average, clicks can cost less than $1 each, depending on whom you are targeting.

Long gone are the glory days in which posting to your Facebook business page would mean reaching the majority of your followers. Even as Facebook creeps closer to the 2.5-billion user mark, business-page posts are notorious for low reach, often being shown to account for 5 percent or fewer of a page's total like count.

Part of this design is by design, to encourage you to cough up the bucks and advertise. But as Facebook continues to grow, the sheer amount of material in a user's feed also becomes a factor; each Facebook user can like up to 5,000 pages, be in up to 6,000 groups and have up to 5,000 friends.

The feed can only hold so much, and Facebook realizes people spend more time on the platform when their feed is filled with updates from their personal communities, so it's likely that groups and personal-profile updates are getting the lion's share of visibility. (Have you seen the TV commercials for Facebook groups lately? The tech giant is pushing groups hard.)
Fortunately, there are workarounds for this lack of visibility, and if you feel a Facebook presence helps increase awareness for your business, you should invest time and energy in your strategy. As a content strategist, I continually evaluate what works best on Facebook and help others do the same. Reaching your Facebook fans is no easy feat, but you can increase the odds of being seen and connecting by strategically playing to the social network's "Edgerank" algorithm, which decides what content appears in News Feeds.

Consider these statistics: The average Facebook user has 262 friends whose content populates the user's news stream, and only half of all users check their Facebook account more than once a day, according to the latest social media usage data from Somerville, N.J.-based Edison Research's The Social Habit. Chances are slim, therefore, that most fans ever look at content from most companies they follow.

Even Facebook itself says most fans aren't seeing companies' content. In March, Facebook reported at it's own marketing conference that, on average, only 16 percent of company brand page posts are actually seen by its fans. This statistic might have been meant to scare brands to buy into Facebook's new advertising opportunities, which include sponsored stories and in-stream placements that increase the likelihood of being seen. But that requires a company to spend even more money on Facebook -- and for advertising, not organic content.

The good news is that Facebook uses its Edgerank algorithm to decide what organic content, including that of a particular user's favorite brands, is seen. The bad news is that Facebook doesn't offer a way for brands to check their Edgerank score or position. That's Facebook's secret sauce.
