Sometimes we catch a supermassive black hole indulging in a stellar snack.

Our NuSTAR telescope has unveiled the origin of X-rays from a tidal disruption event called AT2022cmc. This is one of the most exotic and powerful events in the universe — a supermassive black hole at the center of a distant galaxy tears apart a star that gets too close.

NuSTAR has studied a very rare subclass of these events which also produces jets of material moving at almost the speed of light. Only four jetted tidal disruption events have ever been observed. AT2022cmc is the first in over a decade, and the first since NuSTAR launched in 2012.
