Luis Enrique is trying to bring a tactical evolution in modern football. Let me explain.
José Mourinho established a style at the elite level that relies on direct play combined with individual brilliance. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola brought possession-based football and pressing into the mainstream as a structured, control-oriented philosophy.
But Luis Enrique is blending these two completely different philosophies to create his own hybrid tactical model. In Enrique’s system, his team maintains possession-oriented control, while also switching to direct play whenever the opportunity arises.
His team follows a system, yet still has the ability to decide matches through individual brilliance. While they respect positional structure like Guardiola’s teams, players are given freedom in their movements.
This approach is known as hybridism — where multiple philosophies coexist within the same system and complement each other.
However, Enrique does not want to stop here. Currently, he is working to make every player in his team multi-positional, so that the same player can adapt to different roles within a match.
That’s why we often see center-backs stepping into midfield, forwards operating as wing-backs, and full-backs pushing forward like wingers.
This kind of tactical flexibility is gradually becoming more prominent in his system.
