Dutch Prime Minister Mark Ratta said on Friday that his coalition government had collapsed due to differences over refugee policy.
The four parties in the coalition government could not agree on this sensitive issue.
Although this coalition government was formed a year and a half ago, there have been disagreements between the coalition on immigration and refugee issues for quite some time.
According to local media reports, new elections may be held in November.
Mark Rutter's conservative VVD party is seeking to reduce the number of political asylum seekers. But at least two of his coalition partners are not supporting it.
In an emergency meeting of the cabinet on Friday, the Dutch prime minister announced that the government would collapse if no consensus was reached.
He said he would present his resignation to King Willem-Alexander today (Saturday). However, the current cabinet will serve as a caretaker government until fresh elections are held. See more
