Paul Nicholson, a London-based graphic designer, created the iconic Aphex Twin logo in 1991 for Richard D. James’ alias. The logo, a stylized, amorphic “A,” was hand-drawn using circle templates and rulers, debuting on the 1992 album Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Inspired by rejected sketches for a San Francisco skatewear brand, Anarchic Adjustment, the design embraced an “alien” vibe, resonating with James’ experimental electronic music. The logo, often seen as abstract yet recognizable, became a cultural symbol, appearing on albums, blimps, and street art to tease releases like Syro (2014). Nicholson shared its definitive construction on Instagram in 2017 to correct inaccurate versions, cementing its legacy. He also designed the Xylem typeface and worked with artists like Daft Punk and Warp Records.
