HOW TO SEO OPTIMIZE SHOPIFY COLLECTIONS PAGES:

Here is how to SEO optimize Shopify collections so that your store actually stands a chance at ranking on Google.

Most ecommerce websites completely overlook collections pages but they are extremely important if you want to rank for main keywords on Google.

WHY ARE COLLECTIONS PAGES IMPORTANT?

• These are the pages that will rank for your main keywords (they are typically the most relevant result)
• If you try to rank a particular product for a main keyword, and then you have to change or remove that product, you will lose the ranking
• If you look at Google search results, you'll see that most of the pages that rank for competitive keywords are collections pages

1. META TITLES

• Include your main keyword(s)
• Keep it below 65 characters
• Make them unique on every collection and every page
• Use them to increase CTR

2. URLS

• Include the main keyword in your URL
• Keep the URL slug to 3-4 words max
• Don't keyword stuff or double up keywords

3. H1 HEADLINES

• Include the main keyword(s) you want to rank for in the H1 headline
• Each collection should have only one H1 headline
• Each H1 should be unique (across the whole site)

4. CONTENT

• Include unique content relevant to the topic on each collection page
• Include H2 and H3 headlines with variations of your keyword
• Use competitors to get an idea of what Google wants to see
• FAQs are a great way to get keywords in H2s and H3s

5. IMAGE ALT TEXT

• Include your keyword in the image alt text
• Don't just stuff your keyword into your alt text

6. INTERNAL LINKING

• Create a silo structure by internal linking between collections and subcollections as well as products
• Keep internal linking across silos to a minimum

Paid Search (PPC) vs Organic Search (SEO).

PPC is not the same as SEO.

They have different roles in marketing, often at different times in a brand's growth.

Paid search is direct advertising. You are doing it because you want immediate sales. This is even built into how paid search is measured, through ROAS (return on ad spend).

The goal of paid search is efficiency. As such an effective paid search strategy seeks to win sales by nudging prospects at the last second before purchase.

Organic search is different.
SEO serves as product placement/ distribution.

The aim is to increase the ease and convenience that prospects can buy a brand online.

And to do this, you show up in as many search rankings as possible that have purchase intent.

This increases a brands physical/ digital availability.

The aim of organic search (SEO) is to reach as many buyers as possible.

The difference is that not all of these buyers are ready to buy today. Many of them are researching the category.

This gives brands a chance to be discovered by consumers.

One of the core problems is that brands overspend on paid search because of either last click attribution or even weirder, bidding on their own brand.

This is paying Google to access customers they would have won anyway. Or over estimating paid search performance due to incorrect attribution.

But when working effectively, brands often get stuck on the performance plateau.

This is where a brand cannot grow beyond it's effective paid search reach. They are at the limit of efficiency and anything beyond this has diminishing returns.

Organic search (SEO) success comes through keyword variations.

A single page can rank for hundreds of high purchase intent searches. Resulting in a brand being advertised and discovered by thousands of potential 'in the market' buyers.

And because you don't pay per click there is no incremental media spend.

In essence, your spend on SEO compounds in value over time and adds value to your business as your website is an asset.

Often even in insolvency, a brands website is purchased for millions.

The problem is of course that paid search budgets are vastly larger than SEO budgets.

Each business enters a bidding war forcing the cost per click up.

When SEO can be fuelled through digital publicity, providing immediate business benefits.

Also, your investment in SEO tends to be in physical time in staff/ agencies that directly work on your website.

You are investing in your business.

All the evidence points to organic search being a huge opportunity for most brands.

And when brands wake up from their huge paid search hangover they've built up over the last 16 months.

They'll wake up and look for new ways to aquire customers.

And SEO will be waiting.

The best time to invest in SEO was years ago.

The second best time to invest in SEO is today.

Solve Search console Errors: Discovered, currently not indexed & Crawled, currently not indexed.

Discovered, currently not indexed error

The Discovered, currently not indexed error means that Google knows about your page, but it hasn't crawled it yet. This can happen for a number of reasons, some are below,

1️⃣ Google has not yet had the chance to crawl your page.
2️⃣ Wait a few days and see if Google crawls your page on its own.
3️⃣ Your website is large and has a lot of content, and Google is prioritizing other pages.
4️⃣ Remove pages like feed, php pages etc to make site lighter and keep only relevant content on website.
5️⃣ Google is having trouble accessing your page, perhaps because it is down or overloaded.
6️⃣ Your page is blocked by a robots.txt file or by DISALLOW TAG.
7️⃣ Your page is new and has not yet built up any backlinks.
8️⃣ Thin Content: If your page doesn't have enough valuable information, it's like trying to join a conversation without anything interesting to say.
​9️⃣ Crawl Issues: Sometimes, Google faces hurdles while trying to read your website, like a book with missing pages.

Fixes:
✅ Request indexing for your page using the URL Inspection Tool in Search Console.
✅ Make sure your website is accessible to Google and that your robots.txt file is not blocking your page.
✅ Promote your page so that it builds up backlinks from other high-quality websites.

The Crawled, currently not indexed error

Means that Google has crawled your page, but it has decided not to index it. This can happen for a number of reasons, some are below

1️⃣ Google decided not to index your page because it is low quality.
2️⃣ Google decided not to index your page because it is a duplicate of another page.
3️⃣ Google decided not to index your page because it is blocked by NO-INDEX-TAG
4️⃣ Google decided not to index your page because it is causing problems with your website's crawl budget.

Fixes:
✅ Improve the quality of your content. Make sure your pages are well-written, informative, and relevant to your target audience.
✅ Remove any duplicate pages from your website.
✅ Make sure your robots.txt file is not blocking Google from indexing your page.
✅ Optimize your crawl budget so that Google has more resources to crawl your important pages.
