A major tragedy has struck the skies of India. Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner heading to London Gatwick, crashed just 30 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday. Authorities say there appear to be no survivors among the 242 people onboard, and more lives were likely lost on the ground.
The aircraft, carrying passengers and crew from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, plummeted into a densely populated residential neighborhood, exploding into a fireball that consumed buildings and vehicles in seconds.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik told reporters grimly. “Some locals would have also died,” he added, noting the plane hit residential structures.
