"In one story, Chobi watches his human grow lonelier by the day, unable to help her beyond being present. He muses, "She looked tired. So, I rubbed against her leg." That line carries the entire book's philosophy: that the act of staying, of simply being, is often more powerful than trying to fix," writes Naziba Basher.

"Standing by the pond, waiting for her husband, was an old habit of Fulbanu's. Just as people lean forward to look for a train, knowing it will arrive on time, Fulbanu would gaze down the road, waiting," writes Abdullah Zahid.

Our hearts are broken.

James Baldwin writes, "The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.

Or, I am saying, in other words, that we, the elders, are the only models children have. What we see in the children is what they have seen in us—or, more accurately, what they see in us."

"For readers, The Last Bench also serves as a mirror into a shared, fragmented past. Biswas's memories of Magura are lush, intimate, filled with ancestral echoes. They remind us that the wounds of Partition are still tender. His return to that lost land is not nostalgic but aching. It asks: What do we carry when we lose home? What parts of us remain rooted even after the soil beneath our feet has changed?"- writes Namrata.

All I knew was that even in his final days,
even in the heavy stillness of dying,
her silence spoke louder
than forgiveness ever could.
No one forced her.
No one urged.
The silence between them stood untouched,
a monument of decades.
- Nishat Anjum.

"The novel opens with 18-year-old Louisa, a lonely, angry girl drifting through the world after a difficult childhood in foster care. She's an artist—in a way. She understands beauty and more importantly, she understands longing. All she's ever known of the sea is a small, worn-out postcard. It carries an image of a painting called "The One of the Sea", and she has kept it for years, not knowing why. She has never seen the sea in real life. But this painting, this imagined sea, has been her whole ocean," writes Mahmuda Emdad.

"In this book, it brings the two thinkers and their ideas into conversation. The result is a stunning meditation on some of the concepts that haunt our present moment—humanity and moralism, Zionism today, democracy and imperialism and perhaps most significantly, the question that lies at the very heart of the human condition: what does it mean to be free?" writes Nazia Manzoor.
