The only 3 things Google looks at when ranking local plumbers on Maps.
I said this in a previous post.
Today I am going deeper on each one — because understanding this changes how you think about marketing your business forever.
---
FACTOR 1: RELEVANCE
"Does your business match what the customer searched for?"
This is about signals — how clearly your Google Business Profile communicates what you do.
Google reads your:
→ Primary business category
→ Business description
→ Services you have listed
→ Keywords in your recent posts and reviews
If someone searches "24 hour emergency plumber" and your profile does not mention emergency plumbing anywhere — Google will not show you, even if you are the best plumber in town.
What to do right now:
Open your Google Business Profile description. Does it mention "emergency"? Does it mention "24/7"? Does it say the name of your town? If not — rewrite it tonight.
---
FACTOR 2: PROXIMITY
"How close are you to the person searching?"
This one is simple in theory — Google shows local businesses to local searchers.
But here is what most plumbers miss.
You can expand your effective proximity by setting a service area that covers multiple towns — not just your registered address.
If your business is in Town A but you regularly work in Towns B, C and D — set those towns in your service area.
Google will then show you to searchers in those towns too.
What to do right now:
Go to your Google Business Profile, click "Service Area" and add every town or postcode you actually work in.
---
FACTOR 3: PROMINENCE
"How trusted and well-known does Google think you are?"
This is the biggest opportunity for most regional plumbers.
Prominence is determined by:
→ Number and quality of your Google reviews
→ Recency of reviews (last 3 months matter most)
→ Whether reviewers use keywords in their reviews
→ Your website authority
→ How many other sites mention your business (citations)
Here is the good news:
In small regional towns, your competitors have very low prominence scores.
A plumber in a regional Australian town with 20 reviews and a basic website will often outrank a competitor with 2 reviews and no website — even if that competitor has been in business longer.
The bar is genuinely low.
You just have to clear it.
What to do right now:
Text your last 10 customers today and ask for a Google review. That alone will move your prominence score meaningfully within 3–4 weeks.
