From the other side of the Channel, Jack Gillen creates delicious little concoctions in a blend of folk-blues with delicate flavors that are sometimes rock, sometimes jazz.
The young English guitarist cut his teeth as a studio musician in a variety of musical contexts, which certainly helped him broaden his harmonic palette. His phrasing, supple and precise, invites the listener to follow him along paths that are often introspective, sometimes swinging and sometimes even complex (without sounding like it).
In the tradition of Clapton and J.J. Cale, or even Julian Lage, he offers - with Phil Donnely (eb) and Darren Beckett (dm), with whom he shares the same taste for soft swing and refined melody - a dozen original compositions. Most of the themes stretch out tenderly in an atmosphere that's a little nonchalant (“Imagined Future”, “Mind Changer”, “No Home But Here”), bare and crepuscular (“Lost Again”), light and optimistic (“The Path” or “Ember”) or more incisive (“Already There”, “Longer Nights”). Jack Gillen's picking is sufficiently self-sufficient that there's little or no need for distortion or reverb effects. A natural purity emanates from this organic, bittersweet music, confirmed by nimble drumming and warm electric bass. We pass through sonic landscapes that might at times evoke some British cliffs whipped by a bracing wind and barely warmed by a pale sun. In short, let's take a breath of this bluesy jazz from the other side of the Channel, it can only do good.
