Yesterday the European Commission presented its proposal for the next EU long-term budget.
Here are the key takeaways for culture and media:
💶 A new programme, ‘AgoraEU’, would merge the current Creative Europe programme with the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme.
💶 AgoraEU would consist of three strands: Culture, MEDIA+, and Union Values.
💶 The budget for Culture and MEDIA+ is to be increased.
While the proposed budget increase for culture and media is welcome, Vice-Chair of the CULT Committee Emma Rafowicz warns that cultural funding might get lost within the wider AgoraEU programme. She also expresses concerns over the introduction of broadcasters into the MEDIA+ strand, which is meant to support the audiovisual and cinema sectors.
The Commission’s proposal is only a first step in the negotiations for the next EU long-term budget. The European Parliament will continue advocating for the cultural and creative industries. 🎞️ 🎨 🇪🇺
