Yesterday the European Commission presented its proposal for the next EU long-term budget.

Here are the key takeaways for culture and media:

💶 A new programme, ‘AgoraEU’, would merge the current Creative Europe programme with the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme.
💶 AgoraEU would consist of three strands: Culture, MEDIA+, and Union Values.
💶 The budget for Culture and MEDIA+ is to be increased.

While the proposed budget increase for culture and media is welcome, Vice-Chair of the CULT Committee Emma Rafowicz warns that cultural funding might get lost within the wider AgoraEU programme. She also expresses concerns over the introduction of broadcasters into the MEDIA+ strand, which is meant to support the audiovisual and cinema sectors.

The Commission’s proposal is only a first step in the negotiations for the next EU long-term budget. The European Parliament will continue advocating for the cultural and creative industries. 🎞️ 🎨 🇪🇺

This week, MEPs commemorated the anniversary of the largest mass murder on European soil since WWII: the genocide of over 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in July 1995.

Jasmila Žbanić’s Quo Vadis, Aida?, winner of the 2022 LUX Audience Award, tells the story not only of loss, but of what happens when the world looks away.

Goodbye Poland and hello Denmark! 👋🏻🇵🇱🇩🇰

Today is the last day of Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. Starting tomorrow (July 1st), Denmark will hold the presidency for the coming six months.

The Council of the EU is one of the EU’s decision-making institutions. It’s where representatives of the governments of member states negotiate and adopt laws together with the European Parliament.

Habemus nominatos! 🤩🇪🇺🎬

For the past two days, we held the LUX Audience Award Selection Panel meetings. This means we’re kicking off our 2026 edition!

The Selection Panel gathers cinema professionals from all over Europe, working in different functions in the industry — from producers to distributors. Their very important task? To select the five LUX Audience Award nominees.

To choose the nominated films, panellists consider everything from cinematography to the films’ political importance.
