People talk about warmth like it's a function of tube mics and tape. It is not. The warmth in a great recording comes from musicians hearing each other's actual sound, responding to it, and together creating something balanced and alive in the room before the microphone ever catches it. Then the natural bleed between mics—the acoustic glue—is already there. That is warmth. That and a Vintage Fender Twin heating the room. Everything else is decoration.

Headphones and ensemble music - Here's what happens when a drummer monitors themselves on headphones: the kick level in the mix might be slightly lower than the actual room dominance, so they hit harder to compensate. The snare tone through the headphones won't match the acoustic perception, so they adjust their angle. The hi-hat seems flatter, so they open up. Multiply this across three musicians and you've built a recording where everyone is playing to a synthetic reality instead of each other. Better headphones won't fix it : the initial approach will. How they play, when they breathe, how they respond to the drummer, all of it shifts. You can't unsee this once you understand it. The question is : if where you record was designed for it.
