A+318 STREETS AS SOFT SPA+CES
WHO OWNS THE STREETS? WE OWN THE STREETS!

The street is not gender-neutral. Urban thinkers, architects and urban planners have shown that the public space is designed by and for men: its uses, its dimensions, its mobility, its opening hours. To consider the street through the prism of gender, we must understand this reality and combat the resulting spatial inequalities by drawing on the lived experiences of the city’s female residents and female users of the street, their daily lives, their needs and their desires.

GIJS VAN VAERENBERGH
INVERSE RUIN, POLICORO (IT)

The Inverse Ruin by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh brings the Temple of Dionysus at the archaeological site of Herakleia in Policoro, Italy, back to life. Not in its literal form, but as an artistic interpretation.

There are countless archaeological sites scattered across the Mediterranean region. Faced with this abundance, archaeological museums are each devising their own strategies to keep their sites appealing. The site of Herakleia, an ancient Greek city in southern Italy dating from the fifth century BC, is being redefined through the Siris series of artistic projects, curated by the interdisciplinary laboratory StudioStudioStudio. Along a new route through the park, artistic interventions tell the stories where material remains fall short.

A+318 STREETS AS SOFT SPA+CES
A DESIGN CHALLENGE AS OLD AS THE STREET

In memory of Gideon Boie.

The redistribution of public space is a key issue in today’s urban transition. The need for public space is great, certainly in densely built-up urban areas and perhaps even more so in suburban areas where there is a shortage of squares and parks. The challenge doesn’t lie in the search for new public space. In the city, there are plenty of former industrial plots available. Lots of experiments are also being carried out on intermediate spaces. A far greater design challenge is the immutability of the largest net area of public space, namely the street.

A+, in collaboration with Filter Café Filtré Atelier, warmly invites you to the launch of A+318 Streets as Soft Spaces, on Thursday 25 June at Barmacie in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. The launch of this issue, which the editorial team of A+ produced in collaboration with Gideon Boie, who passed away on 20 May 2026, is entirely dedicated to his ideas and legacy.

One of today’s main design challenges is not only creating new public space, but reimagining the public space we already have, the ‘ordinary street’. The street should once again be approached as a full-fledged architectural space: a public room between buildings, in close dialogue with the façades that border it and open it up. The street should not merely be seen as a place to move through, but as a space where living, working, raising children, caring and coexisting intersect. This approach raises fundamental questions: what does the right to the street mean, who can lay claim to it, and for what purposes?

A+, in collaboration with Filter Café Filtré Atelier, warmly invites you to the launch of A+318 Streets as Soft Spaces, on Thursday 25 June at Barmacie in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. The evening will focus on one of today’s greatest design challenges: reinventing the ‘ordinary’ street. After all, beyond mere traffic management, streets can contribute to numerous other social needs, such as improved air quality and water management, as well as greater social interaction and cultural exchange.

The launch of this issue, which the editorial team of A+ produced in collaboration with Gideon Boie, who passed away on 20 May 2026, is entirely dedicated to his ideas and legacy. The event also marks the start of Openstreets 2026.

RONAN BOUROULLEC | PROJECT 04
Drawings

Ronan Bouroullec’s colourful drawings exist somewhere between art, design and architecture. Through lines, rhythms and layers of colour, he creates compositions that suggest landscapes, structures and imagined spaces. Both intuitive and meticulously crafted, these works offer a unique insight into the thinking of one of today’s most influential designers.

Join us this evening for a talk between designer Ronan Bouroullec and Amarylis Jacobs, artistic director of A+. Don't miss out and get your ticket - only a few left!

A+318 STREETS AS SOFT SPA+CES

A+318 is out now.
In memory of Gideon Boie, co-editor of this issue.

The new issue of A+ turns its gaze to one of the most everyday yet most underestimated spaces of our living environment: the street. In A+318 Streets as Soft Spaces, the street is reconsidered as a fully fledged architectural and social challenge – no longer merely infrastructure for through‑traffic, but a public space where living, working and community life converge. With contributions from diverse voices, this issue brings together sharp analyses, critical reflections and inspiring examples that open the debate on the right to the street, its uses, and the need for a fundamental redesign of this shared space.

With contributions by Eline Dehullu, Gideon Boie, Glenn Lyppens, Gilles Debrun, Apolline Vranken, Eline Aerts, Jean-Guy Pecher Chapeaux, Simon De Boeck, Maarten Van Acker, Erro Rasker, Christophe Van Gerrewey, Fabian De Vriendt, Eloïse Perrillon, Zsuzsanna Böröcz, Pieter T'Jonck.

With projects by MDW — V+, Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen, Agwa — S2JD, Eagles of Architecture, Ouest, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, Ronan Bouroullec, Filter Café Filtré, Wit Architecten, Haverhals Heylen, De Nijl — De Smet Vermeulen, Herman Hertzberger, 51N4E — Plant & Houtgoed — Ara, Bios — vvv — Brat — Osmos, Vectris — Evolta, Overlant — PLOT, Voids — OTO — Endeavour, Studio Laut, Snohetta.

A+318 STREETS AS SOFT SPA+CES

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gideon Boie (1975) on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. He was an architect, philosopher, and co-editor of A+318 STREETS AS SOFT SPA+CES.

We are deeply grateful to Gideon, not only for his invaluable intellectual contribution to this issue, but also for the sharp insights and profound social commitment he expressed so eloquently in his essays and opinion pieces in recent years. He was unconditionally dedicated to an inclusive, liveable city on a human scale.

Gideon had a remarkable ability to expose injustice and inequality, to bring people together, to persuade, and to contribute, step by step, to the change that was needed. He was a gifted and committed thinker, with both an inspired and critical pen.

We are especially grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Gideon one last time. A+318 STREETS AS SOFT SPA+CES is therefore published as a tribute to his ideas and legacy.

We carry his wise words with us and will continue to share them.
