🌍 EFG at the Global Energy Transition Conference & Exhibition (GET2025)!

Organised by the EAGE - European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers, GET2025 is taking place this week (27–31 October 2025) in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The event brings together professionals from across the renewables and decarbonisation sectors.

As an Associated Society of EAGE, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is proud to participate actively in this important event. EFG Vice President Iris Vukovic is representing EFG at our booth - if you are attending, make sure to stop by and say hello!

On 28 October, Iris Vukovic presented the outcomes of our EU-funded CEEGS project during the session “Hybrid and Unconventional CCS”, through her talk “CEEGS Project Completion: Demonstrating Feasibility of CO₂-Based Electrothermal Energy and Geological Storage.”

EFG has also joined forces with EAGE, EuroGeoSurveys, and the European Geosciences Union (EGU) to organise the plenary session “Critical Raw Materials (in Europe)” on 29 October. The session explored the growing importance of secure and sustainable access to critical raw materials essential for the energy transition.

We are delighted to be part of this inspiring event driving forward Europe’s sustainable energy future!

30/10/2025

The CEEGS project has reached a groundbreaking conclusion: Proving that CO₂ can be used for clean, efficient, and safe energy storage at the laboratory scale!

By combining renewable energy storage with CO₂ capture and geological storage, CEEGS turns CO₂ from a waste product into a valuable working fluid for sustainable energy systems.

This innovation marks a key step toward Europe’s climate neutrality goals, advancing both renewable energy integration and industrial decarbonisation. 🌍

24/10/2025

Over the last decade, Europe has experienced a sharp increase in infrastructure expenditure due to the severe and frequent natural phenomena related to climate change. Local consequences, such as habitat destruction, finite freshwater availability, and food scarcity, exert significant pressure on the available ecological space. Therefore, there is a growing interest in assessing risks and vulnerabilities to climate change, which has already led to a wide range of impacts on environmental systems and society, including destabilising security. Increased environmental, social, and financial damage costs are expected in the future. Many of these imminent or ongoing challenges are related to the overexploitation of resources and the energy transition, requiring a more holistic approach to encouraging new technologies, that involves a whole-of-society approach and stakeholder participation. State-of-the-art CCUS and hydrogen energy technologies offer sustainable solutions to mitigate the current situation, allowing a reduction in carbon emissions, a transition towards a low-carbon economy, and an increased overall resilience of the international community to climate change.

Read the full article ‘Climate change challenges and state fragility in the water, energy, food/land, raw material nexus and the position of hydrogen and Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage for increasing resilience‘ published in issue 55 of the journal by Pavlos Tyrologou PhD CGeol EurGeol CPG, Nazaré Couto, Júlio Carneiro, Amanda Loeffen, Vitor Correia, Eleni Gianni, Fernanda De Mesquita Lobo Veloso, Nikolaos Koukouzas, Paula Fernández-Canteli Álvarez, Roman Berenblyum and Glen Burridge.

EFG - The voice of European Geologists

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is a non-governmental organisation that was established in 1980 and includes today 26 national association members.

EFG is a professional organisation whose main aims are to contribute to a safer and more sustainable use of the natural environment, to protect and inform the public and to promote a more responsible exploitation of natural resources.

EFG’s members are National Associations, NAs, whose principal objectives are based in similar aims. The guidelines to achieve these aims are the promotion of excellence in the application of geology and the creation of public awareness of the importance of geoscience for the society.
