As part of the campaign, we are pleased to highlight Women in Geothermal (WING), a global organisation working to advance the education, professional development and leadership of women across the geothermal sector.

Founded in 2013, WING has grown into the world’s largest geothermal network, bringing together more than 4,000 members across 80+ countries. With free and open membership, and a rotating global leadership model, the organisation reflects the diverse and international nature of the geothermal community.

Guided by the values of caring, openness, empowerment and courage, WING continues to build a more inclusive geothermal industry, with the long-term vision of a sector where such advocacy is no longer needed.

As part of the campaign, we are excited to spotlight Girls into Geoscience, an inspiring initiative dedicated to introducing female students to the world of Earth Sciences.

The annual outreach event Girls into Geoscience (GiG) was launched in 2014 by the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. Since then, many girls from schools across the UK and Ireland have participated. The main objective of this outreach initiative is to introduce Earth Science and its diverse and exciting careers to female students.

Through accessible field trips, hands-on workshops, and mentorship, they provide vital role models and prove that the field is for everyone. They are not just teaching geology; they are building a future where the next generation of scientists can see themselves represented and supported.

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) was proud to collaborate with Girls into Geoscience as part of the ENGIE project outreach activities: https://www.engieproject.eu/2020/07/08/engie-at-the-girls-into-geoscience-2020/

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) member in Turkey, Maden Jeologlari Dernegi (MJD), is co-organising the Turkey Mining Investments Summit (TMIS), taking place in Istanbul on 9-10 April 2026.

The Summit is designed to address the investment needs of the mining sector by bringing together investors, project owners, R&D experts, engineers, company executives and academics from across the region and beyond.

The programme will explore key topics shaping the future of mining investment and sustainability, including finance and stock markets, exploration risk, ESG and responsible mining, critical minerals and strategic resources, and the role of mining in the green energy transition. A dedicated Project Marketplace will enable participants to review current mining projects, engage directly with project developers and explore new investment opportunities, alongside international conferences, panel discussions and networking sessions.

The Summit aims to support Turkey’s role as a regional hub for mining investment, innovation and sustainable development, connecting stakeholders from across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

As part of the campaign, we are pleased to highlight the International Association for Geoscience Diversity (IAGD), a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving access and inclusion for people with disabilities in the geosciences.

IAGD combines advocacy with practical action to address barriers across education and professional practice. Their work includes student scholarships, accessible field trips offered at no cost to participants, and a strong focus on ensuring that geoscience fieldwork and learning environments are inclusive for all.

A key initiative is the Library of Inclusive Field Technology (LIFT), a loanable collection of tools such as tablets, cameras and communication technologies that enable educators to design accessible and inclusive field experiences. Alongside this, IAGD supports research on disability inclusion in the geoscience workforce and fosters an international community through mentorship, student chapters and peer networks.

Through sustained advocacy, resources and community building, IAGD continues to play a vital role in shaping a more inclusive and accessible geoscience profession.

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has proudly co-signed this EGEC (European Geothermal Energy Council) letter to the European Commission, joining partners from industry, research, public agencies, and civil society in calling for a dedicated and strong European Geothermal Strategy and Action Plan.

Geothermal energy is vital to the Clean Industrial Deal and Europe’s energy transition. Geologists play a key role in safely and responsibly characterising geothermal resources, enabling renewable heat, cooling, and electricity, as well as access to critical minerals and large-scale underground energy storage.

To unlock the full potential of geothermal energy in Europe and enhance the role of geologists, we propose concrete measures that can be consulted in the EFG Geothermal Manifesto:

EFG - The voice of European Geologists

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is a non-governmental organisation that was established in 1980 and includes today 26 national association members.

EFG is a professional organisation whose main aims are to contribute to a safer and more sustainable use of the natural environment, to protect and inform the public and to promote a more responsible exploitation of natural resources.

EFG’s members are National Associations, NAs, whose principal objectives are based in similar aims. The guidelines to achieve these aims are the promotion of excellence in the application of geology and the creation of public awareness of the importance of geoscience for the society.
