Who really pays for your chatbot?

Behind every AI search is a data centre, where powerful computers process and deliver AI responses. As these facilities expand, they link Europe’s digital demands with the Global South, where the physical infrastructure that props up our AI use is reshaping access to land, water, and electricity.

Investigative journalist Laís martins takes us behind the scenes of her reporting, examining which communities are bearing the cost.

What happens when transparency becomes a threat?

In Sweden, personal information about almost anyone registered in the country is just a search away. For most, it’s a convenience. But for some, it’s a danger.

Last weekend, an email landed in our inbox from Chytomo, an independent media platform covering Ukrainian literature and culture. It asked us to help highlight Russia’s latest attack on Kyiv, which damaged museums, schools, literary institutions, and the homes of Ukrainian writers and artists.

The strikes came days before Kyiv Day and the Book Arsenal Festival, one of Ukraine’s major literary events.

These attacks do more than destroy buildings. They threaten archives, books, artworks, memory, and the cultural life of a society already under huge pressure.

We partnered with Chytomo on the 2022 edition of MayDay Magazine, to amplify voices from Ukraine during the full-scale invasion. We continue to stand with Ukrainian writers, artists, publishers, librarians, and cultural workers defending culture under attack.

To learn more about Chytomo, follow them . Chytomo is currently fundraising to help the Zakharchenko family, you can make a direct transfer to support them via the link in our bio.

More than half of Romania’s ancient forests are situated within EU-protected Natura 2000 areas – a EU-wide network designed to conserve key species and habitats.

Despite this, unregulated logging in the southern Carpathian mountains is decimating the country’s forests. Whilst NGOs fight to save Romania’s forests, some locals say conservation efforts have made daily life harder, as rising firewood prices deepen energy poverty in rural communities.

Romania’s forests sit at the centre of a growing conflict between environmental protection, economic survival, and local livelihoods. Swipe to learn more and read the full article, “Losing the wood from our trees” by and in FOCUS online (link in bio).

Multilingualism is often celebrated as a European ideal - but how does that work in practice, and for whom?

Ahead of Europe Day this weekend, we’re reflecting on a story by .latronico from the 2021 edition of our Mayday magazine.

Behind the scenes at the Court of Justice of the European Union, over 2,000 linguists translate EU law into the Union’s 24 official languages. This ensures that every EU law means the same thing in Rome, Riga, and beyond. But it also reveals deeper inequalities about power, access, and language.

In Malta, the slow justice system is leaving lives in limbo.

Amara was 15 when he was arrested after helping translate on board a ship carrying migrants. At 21, he is still navigating a court process with no clear end in sight.

Malta has the slowest criminal justice system in the EU, with cases stretching on for years due to limited resources and systemic delays. But behind the statistics are real people like Amara, whose lives are shaped by waiting.

Swipe to learn more about Amara’s story and read the full article, “A future on hold” by in FOCUS online or in print (links in bio).

For the last twenty years, thousands of Thai workers have travelled to Finland to pick wild berries, drawn by the promise of high earnings. Instead, many find debt, harsh conditions, and a system that fails to protect them from exploitation.

While Finland’s forests symbolise freedom and tradition, the reality for Thai berry pickers is less idyllic. Swipe to learn more and read the full article, “Wild berries, thorny conditions” by .tuomasjukka with illustrations by Pauli Salmi in FOCUS online or in print (links in bio).
